The Russian mafia ( or ), also known as Bratva ( ; ) less as Obshchak (Общак) or Brigades (Бригады) , is a collective of various organized crime related elements originating or/and operating in Russia. In December 2009, Timur Lakhonin, the head of the National Central Bureau of Interpol within Russia, stated that "Certainly, there is crime involving our former compatriots abroad, but there is no data suggesting that an organized structure of criminal groups comprising former Russians exists abroad" on the topic of international Russian criminal gangs. Solntsevskaya Bratva
The Solntsevskaya Organized Crime Group (), also known as the Solntsevskaya Bratva (), is a Russian crime syndicate group. Other simplified versions of the name are Solntsevskaya Brotherhood and Solntsevskaya gang. Rise to power The Solntsevskaya gang was founded in Russian SFSR in the late 1980s by Sergei Mikhailov, a former waiter who had served a prison term for fraud. Based in the Solntsevo District of Moscow, the gang recruited local unemployed, aggressive young men as foot soldiers and also made use of thief in law Dzhemal Khachidze to enhance their reputation amongst established criminals. The Solntsevo District was also strategically located near the M3 highway leading to Ukraine, the MKAD, Moscow's ring road, as well as the Vnukovo International Airport. Tambovskaya Bratva
The Tambovskaya Bratva is a large gang in Saint Petersburg, Russia. According to common allegations, it was organised in Leningrad in 1988 by two men from Tambov Oblast, Vladimir Kumarin and one from St. Petersburg. The gang is named after their region of origin. Despite allegations, Kumarin continues to deny his involvement. Originally the gangsters were recruited from people of Tambov origin and sportsmen, and were engaged in a protection racket. It became famous in the city after coverage from Alexander Nevzorov in his '' 600 seconds'' TV show in the city. Orekhovskaya Gang
The Orekhovskaya Organized Crime Group () was a powerful criminal organization based in Moscow active between the late 1980s and early 2000s. History The gang was founded in 1988 and was made up primarily of former young sportsmen between 18 and 25. The gang's leader was Sergey Timofeev, nicknamed "Sylvester" after Sylvester Stallone for his muscular build. Todorov established contacts with other prominent underworld figures such as Vyacheslav Ivankov and Sergei Mikhailov. Mark Galeotti (born October 1965) is a British historian, lecturer and writer on transnational crime and Russian security affairs and director of the consultancy Mayak Intelligence.
