Braničevo Fortress
Braničevo Fortress is an archaeological site of medieval fortress whose remains are situated in the village of Kostolac, in Serbia, about 130km East of Belgrade and 24 km from North East of Požarevac. It consists of two medieval fortified structures located in Mali Grad and Veliki Grad, on the right bank of the Danube and above Dunavac and the Mlava River. History Medieval Braničevo developed in the area of the former Roman and Early Byzantine city and legionary fort Viminacium. The fortress was located on an ancient Roman road that was still in use during the Middle Ages. The main road known as ''Via Militaris'' connected the medieval cities of Belgrade, Braničevo and Niš. Braničevo was of great importance from the 10th to the 13th centuries. Braničevo (Golubac)
Braničevo is a village in the municipality of Golubac, Serbia. According to the 2002 census, the village has a population of 942 people. It lies on the river Pek. Braničevo lies near the ruins of the Roman town of Viminacium, which was abandoned around 600. In the Middle Ages, it was the seat of an Orthodox bishopric and the site of a Byzantine fortress. It occupied a strategic position along the ''Via Militaris'' between Belgrade and Niš. In Greek, it was known as Branitzova (Βρανίτζοβα) or Branitza (Βρανίτζα). By the 12th century, Braničevo was the centre of a ''doukaton'' (duchy) governed by a '' doux'' (duke). During the war of 1127–1129 against Hungary, the Hungarians razed the town. It was restored and resettled by the Byzantines in 1166. Béla III of Hungary occupied it in 1182, but turned it over as part of his daughter's dowry when she was betrothed to Emperor Isaac II in 1185. Siege Of Braničevo (1154)
The siege of Braničevo was laid by Hungarian king Géza II against Byzantine-held Braničevo in late 1154. Background Emperor Manuel's cousin, Andronikos Komnenos, who administered Belgrade, Braničevo, and Niš sent a letter to Géza II in 1154, offering to hand over those towns to him in exchange for his support against the emperor. Géza II sent his envoys to Sicily to sign a new alliance with William I of Sicily around the end of the year, but William I was fighting with his rebellious subjects. Siege Although Andronikos' plot was discovered and he was captured, Géza II invaded the Byzantine Empire and laid siege to in late 1154. Géza II was aided by Cumans, who had been raiding the Danube at the time. As a Hungarian vassal, Borić, the ''ban'' of Bosnia took part in the attack, alongside a Bohemian detachment.
