Brainstormers
The Brainstormers are a group of young American women artists whose performances mostly address gender inequity in the US art world. Consisting of fellow Hunter MFA graduates Danielle Mysliwiec, Elaine Kaufmann and Maria Dumlao, their most well-known work is one where they stood in costume, at the entrance of P.S.1 during the ''Greater New York'' show in 2005, pointing accusingly at the institution for its gender discrimination in its selection of artists. Vox Populi (art Gallery)
Vox Populi is a nonprofit art gallery and collective in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1988, it presents experimental art and ideas via monthly shows, performances, and gallery talks. Located on North 11th Street, it is the longest running artist collective in the city. Among the artists whose work the space has hosted include Kembra Pfahler, Guy Ben-Ari, Virgil Marti and Brainstormers member Maria Dumlao. Musical performers at their old location on Cherry Street included Gang Gang Dance, Comets on Fire, Growing, Wolf Eyes and many others. Art Criticism
Art criticism is the discussion or evaluation of visual art. Art critics usually criticize art in the context of aesthetics or the theory of beauty. A goal of art criticism is the pursuit of a rational basis for art appreciation but it is questionable whether such criticism can transcend prevailing socio-political circumstances. The variety of artistic movements has resulted in a division of art criticism into different disciplines which may each use different criteria for their judgements. The most common division in the field of criticism is between historical criticism and evaluation, a form of art history, and contemporary criticism of work by living artists. Despite perceptions that art criticism is a much lower risk activity than making art, opinions of current art are always liable to drastic corrections with the passage of time.
