Brae (Old Norse: ''Breiðeið'', meaning "the wide isthmus") is a village on the island of Mainland in Shetland, Scotland, United Kingdom. In it had a population of . Description Brae was historically a fishing village, but with the construction of the nearby Sullom Voe Oil Terminal in the 1970s it grew rapidly, merging with the nearby village of Northbrae. It is located at the northern end of Busta Voe, on the narrow isthmus that joins Northmavine to the rest of the Mainland. The village stages its own Up Helly Aa. The A970 which connects Lerwick to Northmavine forms the main street of Brae. Brae's police and fire stations, schools, and NHS clinic service much of the northern part of the Mainland. Delting Up Helly Aa (known as Brae Up Helly Aa until 2001) is the final festival in the Shetland Islands' Up Helly Aa calendar, taking place on the third Friday of March in the parish of Delting. History The festival was originally held by Brae Junior High School, the first being held in 1970. The school continued to hold the festival until 1979, and the remaining 'junior' festivals were held by parents and staff from the school. The Senior and Junior festivals had a two-year overlap, the first Senior festival in 1981, the last Junior festival in 1982. Since the beginning of the senior festival, the Jarl's Squad lunch has taken place at various locations associated with Sullom Voe Terminal. It was held on board TEV ''Rangatira'' in 1981, at Firth Camp in 1982, at Sullom Voe & Brae Sailing Club in 1983, and Firth Camp again in 1984. Erraid Davies
Erraid Davies (born 9 February 2001 in Dundee, Scotland) is a Scottish swimmer from Skeld in Shetland. In 2014 at the age of 13 she became the youngest person to compete for Scotland in the Commonwealth Games and achieved a bronze medal in the SB9 category for 100m breaststroke. Her parents are Joyce and David Davies, and she has two older sisters. Disability Davies was diagnosed with Perthes disease, a hip problem, at the age of four and was in a wheelchair for another four years. Swimming Since being diagnosed and advised not to do any weight-bearing exercise she took up swimming so she could stay fit. She swam her first mile before the age of six.
