Brad Martin (athlete)
Brad Martin (born August 12, 1986) is a Canadian snowboarder who specializes in the halfpipe. Martin was born and resides in Hamilton, Ontario, currently in the west Hamilton area of Ancaster. Career In 2006, he finished 16th in the halfpipe event at the Olympics. He won a bronze medal at the 2007 FIS Snowboarding World Championships. On February 29, 2008, he won his first world cup event. He has been the Canadian champion in the halfpipe for three straight years, winning in 2007, 2008 and 2009. On January 25, 2010, he was one of 18 athletes announced to the Olympic snowboard team. The men's halfpipe competition of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics was held at Cypress Mountain on February 17, 2010. Summary In each round of competition, each competitor performed two rides through the halfpipe. The highest-scoring run determined whether or not the competitor continued to the next round (or medaled, in the final round). In each round (except for the first run of the qualifying round) the order of performance was based on the inverse order of scoring (i.e., the competitor with the lowest score went first and so forth with the highest-scoring competitor going last). The 2006 Winter Olympics (), officially the XX Olympic Winter Games () and also known as Torino 2006, were a winter multi-sport event held from 10 to 26 February in Turin, Italy. A half-pipe is a structure used in gravity extreme sports such as skateboarding, snowboarding, skiing, freestyle BMX, skating, and scooter riding. Overview The structure resembles a cross-section of a swimming pool, essentially two concave ramps (or quarter-pipes), topped by copings and decks, facing each other across a flat transition, also known as a ''tranny''. Originally half-pipes were half sections of a large diameter pipe. Since the 1980s, half-pipes contain an extended ''flat bottom'' between the quarter-pipes. The original style half-pipes are no longer built. Flat ground provides time to regain balance after landing and more time to prepare for the next trick. Half-pipe applications include leisure recreation, skills development, competitive training, amateur and professional competition, demonstrations, and as an adjunct to other types of skills training.
