George Alan O'Dowd (born 14 June 1961), known professionally as Boy George, is an English singer-songwriter and DJ who rose to fame as the lead singer of the pop band Culture Club. He began his solo career in 1987. Boy George grew up in Eltham and was part of the New Romantic movement which emerged in the late 1970s to early 1980s. His androgynous look and style of fashion was greatly inspired by glam rock pioneers David Bowie and Marc Bolan. He formed Culture Club with Roy Hay (musician), Roy Hay, Mikey Craig and Jon Moss in 1981. The band's second album, ''Colour by Numbers'' (1983), sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. As a solo artist, English singer Boy George has released nine studio albums, five compilation albums and forty-eight singles. The vocalist has also released seven DJ albums, three EPs and a soundtrack album. Boy George was born as George Alan O'Dowd on 14 June 1961 in Bexley, London, England. The singer was essentially part of the English New Romantic movement which emerged in the early 1980s. He helped give androgyny an international stage with the success of Culture Club during the 1980s. His music is often classified as blue-eyed soul, influenced by rhythm and blues and reggae. New Romantic
New Romantic was an underground subculture movement that originated in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s. The movement emerged from the nightclub scene in London and Birmingham at venues such as Billy's and The Blitz. The New Romantic movement was characterised by flamboyant, eccentric fashion inspired by fashion boutiques such as Kahn and Bell in Birmingham and PX in London. Early adherents of the movement were often referred to by the press by such names as Blitz Kids, New Dandies and Romantic Rebels. Influenced by David Bowie, Marc Bolan and Roxy Music, the New Romantics developed fashions inspired by the glam rock era coupled with the early Romantic period of the late 18th and early 19th century (from which the movement took its name). Jonathan Aubrey Moss (born 11 September 1957) is an English drummer, best known as a member of the 1980s pop group Culture Club. He has also played with other bands, including London, the Nips, the Damned and Adam and the Ants. Early life At Highgate School, Moss developed a fascination for sports, especially boxing, but he did not want a professional sporting career. It was also at Highgate that he formed his first band, Pig Williams, along with his friend Nick Feldman (who would later co-found Wang Chung). Together they performed at several school events. After finishing high school, Jon held various jobs, including working at his father's clothing store, as a cake salesman and as a sound engineer at Marquee Studios. Roy Hay (musician)
Roy Ernest Hay (born 12 August 1961) is an English singer, songwriter, composer and musician. He is best known as the lead guitarist, keyboardist, and backing vocalist of the Pop music, pop/New wave music, new wave band Culture Club. Hay, a trained pianist since the age of five, replaced founding member Johnny Suede in 1981. Some of Hay's musical influences were Stevie Wonder, The Isley Brothers and Led Zeppelin. Before his involvement with Culture Club, Hay was a hairdresser in his native Essex. It was during Culture Club's beginnings that Hay met Alison Green. The two married in 1982. According to the "Culture Club" episode the VH-1 series ''Behind the Music'', Hay assisted Boy George in giving up heroin.
