''Bowie'' is a genus of Ctenidae that was described by Peter Jäger in 2022. The genus was named after the English singer-songwriter and actor David Bowie and currently encompasses 107 species, 55 of which were named after elements from David Bowie's musical catalogue. Peter Jäger
Peter Jäger is a German arachnologist, and current Head of Arachnology at the Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum in Frankfurt, Germany. He has named several spiders after celebrities; in 2008, he named '' Heteropoda davidbowie'' after British singer David Bowie, and '' Heteropoda ninahagen'' after German singer Nina Hagen. In 2013, he named '' Ctenus monaghani'' (currently in the genus '' Bowie'') after actor Dominic Monaghan, to honor his work in the documentary series ''Wild Things with Dominic Monaghan''. In 2020, Jäger named a new genus and species of huntsman spiders from Madagascar after Greta Thunberg. The new spider is named ''Thunberga greta''. Frederic Henry Gravely
Frederic Henry Gravely (7 December 1885 – 1965) was an eminent British arachnologist, entomologist, botanist, zoologist and student of archaeology, who conducted pioneering research and wrote extensively on various subjects during his tenure at the Indian Museum, Calcutta, and the Government Museum, Madras. Early life Gravely was born in 1885 in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, England to Arthur Frederic Gravely and Margaret Hutchinson, the eldest of four children. The family were Quakers and although the father was a businessman, he was interested in natural history. His mother came from a farming family which also produced Sir Jonathan Hutchinson. Embrik Strand
Embrik Strand (2 June 1876 – 3 November 1947) was an entomologist and arachnologist who classified many insect and spider species including the greenbottle blue tarantula. Life and career Strand was born in Ål, Norway. He studied at the University of Kristiania (now University of Oslo). Around 1900 he focused on collecting insect specimens from Norway. These are now deposited at the university's museum, where he worked as a curator from 1901 to 1903. After studying at the University of Oslo Strand traveled in Norway from 1898 to 1903 collecting a great number of insects. For part of this time (1901–1903) he was a conservator in the museum of zoology of the university. He then left for Germany where he continued his studies of zoology at the University of Marburg (1903), then he worked with State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart (1905) and, later, that of Tübingen and then with Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt. Sumatra is one of the Sunda Islands of western Indonesia.
