Bothwell (UK Parliament Constituency)
Bothwell was a county constituency in Lanarkshire represented in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1918 to 1983. It was formed by the division of Lanarkshire (UK Parliament constituency), Lanarkshire constituency. Boundaries From 1918 the constituency consisted of "The part of the Middle Ward County District which is contained within the parishes of Old Monkland and Bothwell, exclusive of all burghs or portions of burghs situated therein." North West Lanarkshire was a county constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom (Westminster) from 1885 to 1918. 1935 United Kingdom General Election
The 1935 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday 14 November 1935. It resulted in a second (though reduced) landslide victory for the three-party National Government, which was led by Stanley Baldwin of the Conservative Party after the resignation of Ramsay MacDonald due to ill health earlier in the year. It is the most recent British general election to have seen any party or alliance of parties win a majority of the popular vote. Helen Shaw (Unionist Politician)
Helen Brown Shaw, MBE (''née'' Graham; 2 June 1879 – 20 April 1964) was a Unionist Party politician in Scotland. Career Shaw was active during World War I, chairing charities such as the Lanarkshire Prisoners of War Relief Committee. She was made an MBE in 1920. In 1930, she was the first woman to be elected to Lanarkshire County Council. In the Conservative landslide of 1931, Shaw was elected Member of Parliament for the normally Labour seat of Bothwell. She held the seat until 1935, when it was regained by Labour. As an MP, she worked for improved condition in the Lanarkshire mines, and to bring new industries to the area. In 1938, she became district administrator of the WVS for air raid precautions, West of Scotland. Personal life Shaw was the daughter of Annie Gillespie and David Graham, born in Glasgow, Scotland, on 2 June 1879. She married Major David Shaw of the 6th Cameronians on 18 September 1879. 1931 United Kingdom General Election
The 1931 United Kingdom general election was held on Tuesday, 27 October 1931. It saw a landslide election victory for the National Government, a three-party coalition which had been formed two months previously after the collapse of the second Labour government. Journalist Ivor Bulmer-Thomas described the result as "the most astonishing in the history of the British party system". Unable to secure support from his cabinet for his preferred policy responses to the economic and social crises brought about by the Great Depression, Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald split from the Labour Party and formed a new national government in coalition with the Conservative Party and a number of Liberals. Joseph Sullivan (MP)
Joseph Sullivan (8 September 1866 – 13 February 1935) was a Scottish Labour Party politician who served as a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1922 to 1924, and from 1926 to 1931. Life Born in Cambuslang to Irish immigrants Bernard and Mary (née Carroll), Sullivan was educated in Bellshill and Newton, before becoming a coal miner. He became active in the Lanarkshire Miners' County Union, serving as its president, and as a full-time agent for the union. At the 1906 United Kingdom general election, Sullivan stood for the Scottish Workers' Representation Committee in North West Lanarkshire, but was not elected. In 1909, the committee became part of the Labour Party, for which Sullivan stood in North East Lanarkshire at the January 1910 United Kingdom general election, but he was again unsuccessful. John Robertson Order of the British Empire, MBE (1867 – 14 February 1926) was a Labour Party (UK), Labour Party politician in the United Kingdom. He began work in the coal mines at age 11, eventually becoming Chairman of the Scottish Miners' Union. The Unionist Party was the main centre-right political party in Scotland between 1912 and 1965. David MacDonald (British Politician)
David Henderson MacDonald (c. 1857 – 22 June 1919) was briefly the Conservative Party (UK), Conservative MP for Bothwell (UK Parliament constituency), Bothwell in Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was elected MP for Bothwell at the 1918 United Kingdom general election, 1918 General Election after defeating the Labour party (UK), Labour candidate John Robertson (Bothwell MP), John Robertson by 322 votes, becoming the first MP from Bothwell. MacDonald did not serve long as an MP, as he died in June 1919 (at age 61), after just 176 days in office. Robertson went on to win the ensuing by-election.
