Maine is a town in Broome County, New York, United States. The population was 5,377 at the 2010 census. The town is on the western border of the county and is northwest of Binghamton. The area that is now Massachusetts was colonized by English settlers in the early 17th century and became the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the 18th century. Before that, it was inhabited by a variety of Indian tribes. Owego (village), New York
Owego is a village in and the county seat of Tioga County, New York, United States. The population was 3,896 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Binghamton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name is derived from the Iroquois word ''Ahwaga'', meaning ''where the valley widens.'' The Village of Owego is by the west town line of the Town of Owego and is west of Binghamton, New York. Owego is one of only twelve villages in New York still incorporated under a charter; all other New York villages have incorporated or re-incorporated under the provisions of Village Law. The Treaty of Hartford is a treaty concluded between New York and Massachusetts on December 16, 1786 in Hartford, Connecticut. Background The colonial charters for New York and Massachusetts both described their boundaries as extending westward to the Pacific Ocean. However, both charters used distances from coastal rivers as their baselines, and thus both states could claim the same land. The area in dispute included all of western New York State west of, approximately, Seneca Lake, extending all the way to the Niagara River and Lake Erie, and north to south from the shore of Lake Ontario to the Pennsylvania border. Central New York Military Tract
The Military Tract of Central New York, also called the New Military Tract, consisted of nearly of bounty land set aside in Central New York to compensate New York's soldiers after their participation in the Revolutionary War. Establishment The Province of New York (predecessor of the U.S. state) had already guaranteed each soldier at least at the end of the war (depending on rank), but by 1781, New York had enlisted only about half of the quota set by the U.S. Congress and needed a stronger incentive. The legislature authorized an additional per soldier, using land from 25 Military Tract Townships to be established in central New York State. Each of the townships was to comprise 100 lots of each. Three more such townships, Junius, Galen, and Sterling, were later added to accommodate additional claims at the end of the war.
