Borough Of Waterloo
The Municipality of Waterloo was a Local government in Australia, local government area of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The municipality was proclaimed on 16 May 1860 and, with an area of 3.4 square kilometres, included the modern suburbs of Waterloo, New South Wales, Waterloo, Zetland, New South Wales, Zetland and Rosebery, New South Wales, Rosebery. The suburb of Alexandria, New South Wales, Alexandria was originally included as the Western Ward of the council but seceded as a Municipality of Alexandria, separate municipality in 1868. After several attempts to amalgamate with various neighbours in the mid-1920s, the council was amalgamated with the City of Sydney, along with most of its neighbours, with the passing of the ''Local Government (Areas) Act 1948'', although parts of the former council area were transferred in 1967 to the City of South Sydney. Waterloo Town Hall, Sydney
The Waterloo Town Hall is a heritage-listed town hall located in Waterloo, a suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Located at 770 Elizabeth Street, it was built in 1880–82 in the Victorian Italianate architectural style with Second Empire elements by John Smedley, Edward Hughes and Ambrose Thornley. The town hall was the seat of Waterloo Municipal Council from 1882 to 1948 and since 1972 has been the Waterloo Library, a branch of the City of Sydney Library (and formerly South Sydney Library) servicing Waterloo and Alexandria. History and description When the Municipality of Waterloo was proclaimed in May 1860, the council first met in a room on Botany Road. However, when the Alexandria part of the council area separated and formed their own municipality in August 1868, the council met in a room in Wellington Street, Waterloo, until they commissioned the new Town Hall in 1880.
