Boris Vainshtein
Boris Konstantinovich Vainshtein (Russian: Бори́с Константи́нович Вайнште́йн, 10 July 1921 – 28 October 1996) was a Russian crystallographer. He headed the Laboratory of Protein Crystallography of the Institute of Crystallography, Russian Academy of Sciences, and was the director of the institute, where he spent the majority of his career. Vainshtein studied at the Lomonosov Moscow State University and the Institute of Steel. The National University of Science and Technology (MISiS) (russian: Национальный исследовательский технологический университет МИСиС) is a public technological university in the field of steelmaking and metallurgy, based in Moscow, Russia. Alexei Vasilievich Shubnikov (russian: Алексей Васильевич Шубников; 29March 1887 – 27April 1970) was a Soviet crystallographer and mathematician. Shubnikov was the founding director of the Institute of Crystallography (named after him following his death) of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union in Moscow. Shubnikov pioneered Russian crystallography and its application. Life Career In 1912 Shubnikov graduated from the Department of Natural Sciences of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of Moscow University. From 1920 to 1925 he was a professor at the Ural Mining Institute, Yekaterinburg.
