Borgarhreppur () was formerly a rural parish (''hreppur'') in Mýrasýsla county, west Iceland, named after the ancient farm and church estate Borg á Mýrum which was occupied by Skallagrímur Kveldúlfsson, one of Iceland's original settlers. A hreppur () is a type of rural municipality in Iceland. These administrative units primarily consist of small rural villages, often with few or no towns, and are overseen by a . The ''hreppur'' is one of Iceland’s oldest administrative units, likely dating back to before 1000 AD, when each ''hreppur'' was required to have at least twenty freeholders. Smaller units could be established with permission from the Lögrétta. The term (from Old Norse ''hreppr'') is referenced in Icelandic legal texts such as the Gray Goose Laws (Grágás) and Law of Iceland (Jónsbók). Iceland was historically divided into 23 counties known as ''sýslur'' (), and 23 independent towns known as ''kaupstaðir'' (). Iceland is now split up between 24 sýslumenn (magistrates) that are the highest authority over the local police (except in Reykjavík where there is a special office of police commissioner) and carry out administrative functions such as declaring bankruptcy and marrying people outside of the church. The jurisdictions of these magistrates often follow the lines of the historical counties, but not always. When speaking of these new "administrative" counties, the custom is to associate them with the county seats rather than using the names of the traditional counties, even when they cover the same area. Borg á Mýrum
Borg () (often referred to as Borg á Mýrum) is a settlement due west of Borgarnes township in Iceland. Its recorded history reaches back to the settlement of Iceland. One of the country's original settlers was Skallagrímur Kveldúlfsson (''Skalla-Grímr''), who claimed the area around Borg as his land, built a farm and made his home there. His son Egill Skallagrímsson then continued to live and farm at Borg á Mýrum. Borg á Mýrum was visited in 1897 by a British antiquary, William Gershom Collingwood (1854-1932),(see note) who found 'the historical homestead, still partly built of oak-beams carved and moulded in the ancient times'. This building has not survived. However, there is a twentieth-century monument to Egill by Icelandic sculptor Ásmundur Sveinsson (1893–1982). Skalla-Grímr
Grímr Kveldúlfsson, usually called Skalla-Grímr, was a Norwegian who lived in the ninth and tenth centuries. He is an important character in ''Egils saga'' and is mentioned in the ''Landnámabók''.''Landnámabók'', § 18 Biography Family Skalla-Grímr was the son of Kveldúlfr Bjálfason and Salbjörg Káradóttir. He had one brother, Þorolfr, and was related to Ketil Trout on his father's side and Eyvind Lambi on his mother's. He was married to Bera Yngvarsdóttir and had two sons, Þorolfr and Egill, and two daughters, Sæunn and Þórunn. His ancestor, Hallbjorn, was Norwegian-Sami. Borgarbyggð () is a municipality in the west of Iceland. The biggest township in the municipality is Borgarnes, with a population of 1,887 inhabitants.
