BK 5 Cannon
The Rheinmetall ''Bordkanone'' 5, or BK-5, was a WWII-era German 50 mm autocannon primarily intended for use against Allied heavy bombers, such as the United States Army Air Forces's (USAAF) Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress. The shells had a high muzzle velocity and significant kinetic energy, allowing them to be fired from distances outside the range of the bombers' defensive guns. The large explosive content of each shell almost ensured the destruction of any bomber that was hit. Rheinmetall was given a contract in 1943 to adapt the 50 mm 5 cm ''KwK'' 39 tank gun, from the Panzer III tank, for aerial use in the twin-engined Messerschmitt Me 410 ''Hornisse'' bomber destroyer. The Bordkanone 3,7 (BK 3,7) ("on-board cannon 3.7") was a German anti-tank/bomber autocannon of World War II and based on the earlier 3.7 cm Flak 18 made by Rheinmetall. It was mounted on Luftwaffe aircraft such as the Junkers Ju 87 G-1 and G-2; Henschel Hs 129B-2/R3; Messerschmitt Bf 110G-2/R1-3; Junkers Ju 88P-2 or P-3 and others. The cannon could be attached under the wings or the fuselage of the aircraft as self-contained gun pods with 12-round magazines. It fired Armour Piercing Composite Rigid (APCR, Tungsten-cored) ammunition or high-explosive shells at 160 rounds per minute. The MK 108 (German: ''Maschinenkanone''—"machine cannon") is a 30 mm caliber autocannon manufactured in Germany during World War II by Rheinmetall‑Borsig for use in aircraft. Development The weapon was developed as a private venture by the company in 1940 and was submitted to the '' Reichsluftfahrtministerium'' (RLM—Reich Aviation Ministry) in response to a 1942 requirement for a heavy aircraft weapon for use against the Allied heavy bombers appearing over German-controlled regions by then. Testing verified that the autocannon was well suited to this role, requiring on average just four hits with its 85g RDX-load (in a 330g shell) and a resulting strongly brisant high-explosive ammunition, to bring down a heavy bomber such as a B-17 Flying Fortress or B-24 Liberator, and just a single "shattering" hit to down a fighter. The SC 1800 ''Satan'' ('' Sprengbombe Cylindrisch 1800'') was a general-purpose bomb used by the German Luftwaffe during World War II. Design The SC 1800 had a single piece forged and machined steel body and was similar in construction to the preceding SC 1000 and SC 1200 bombs. The bomb was usually filled with a mixture of 40% amatol and 60% Trotyl, but when used as an anti-shipping bomb it was filled with ''Trialen 105'' (a mixture of 15% hexogen, 70% Trotyl and 15% aluminium powder) and stenciled with the markings "105" and "Bei Abwurf auf Land nicht im Tiefangriff und nur o. The SC 1000 ('' Sprengbombe Cylindrisch 1000'') or ''cylindrical explosive bomb'' was a large air-dropped general-purpose thin-cased high explosive demolition bomb used by Germany during World War II. Design The SC 2500 had a single piece machined aluminium body with a welded nose piece. Around the nose of the bomb was a ''kopfring'' - a metal ring, triangular in cross-section, designed to prevent ground penetration or to stop forward momentum when hitting the water. The SC 2500 also had a circular braced tail ring with four fins. The SC 2500 was similar in construction to the SB 2500 and the main difference between the two was the SB 2500's case was made of steel.
