Boquila
''Boquila'' is a genus of flowering plants in the family Lardizabalaceae, endemic to temperate forests of central and southern Chile and Argentina. It is monotypic, being represented by the single species ''Boquila trifoliolata'', locally known as voqui blanco or pilpil in its native range, and sometimes referred as the chameleon vine since a recent report on leaf mimicry. The species was first described in 1782 by Juan Ignacio Molina, and the genus itself was established in 1839 by Joseph Decaisne. ''B. trifoliata'' forms non-parasitic vines that wind around host plants, using them for structure and protection. ''B. trifoliata'' is monoecious, and its flowers are an off white color. It bears an edible fruit and has been historically used in rope and basket making. ''B. trifoliata'' is the only known plant species reported to engage in mimetic polymorphism, or the ability to mimic multiple host species, often simultaneously. Lardizabalaceae
Lardizabalaceae is a family (biology), family of flowering plants. The family has been universally recognized by taxonomists, including the APG II system (2003; unchanged from the APG system of 1998), which places it in the order Ranunculales, in the clade eudicots. The family consist of 7 genera with about 40 known species of woody plants. All are lianas, save ''Decaisnea'', which are pachycaul shrubs. The leaf, leaves are alternate, and compound (usually palmate), with pulvinate leaflets. The flowers are often in drooping racemes. They are found in eastern Asia, from the Himalayas to Japan, with the exception of the genera ''Lardizabala'' and ''Boquila'', both native to southern South America (Chile, and ''Boquila'' also in adjacent western Argentina). The extinct genus ''Kajanthus'' is known from the Early Cretaceous of Portugal. Joseph Decaisne
Joseph Decaisne (7 March 1807 – 8 January 1882) was a French botanist and agronomist. He became an ''aide-naturaliste'' to Adrien-Henri de Jussieu (1797–1853), who served as the chair of rural botany. It was during this time that he began to study plants brought back by various travelers like those of Victor Jacquemont (1801–1832) from Asia. Decaisne used applied research, most notably on the agronomy of the madder, the yam and the ramie. He was also interested in algae. Biography Although born in Brussels, Belgium, he exercised his activity exclusively in Paris. He entered in 1824 as a gardener at the ''Muséum national d'histoire naturelle'' (French museum of natural history) and became, in 1832, head of the ''carré des semis'' section. Mimicry
In evolutionary biology, mimicry is an evolved resemblance between an organism and another object, often an organism of another species. Mimicry may evolve between different species, or between individuals of the same species. Batesian Mimicry
Batesian mimicry is a form of mimicry where a harmless species has evolved to imitate the warning signals of a harmful species directed at a predator of them both. It is named after the English naturalist Henry Walter Bates, who worked on butterflies in the rainforests of Brazil. Batesian mimicry is the most commonly known and widely studied of mimicry complexes, such that the word mimicry is often treated as synonymous with Batesian mimicry. In ecology, crypsis is the ability of an animal or a plant to avoid observation or detection by other animals. It may be part of a predation strategy or an antipredator adaptation. Carlo Giuseppe Bertero
Luigi Carlo Giuseppe Bertero (b. Santa Vittoria d'Alba, October 14, 1789 d. April 1831, – South Pacific Ocean) was an Italian physicist, physician, naturalist, botanist, bryologist and pteridologist. He explored the West Indies between 1816 and 1821 coinciding with the Venezuelan scientist and later president, José María Vargas in Puerto Rico although there is no evidence of any exchange between them. During his two voyages, February 1828 to September 1830 and between March and May 1830, he collected and described the flora of Chile. He also examined plants native to the Pacific island of Juan Fernandez, as well as Guadeloupe, Haiti, Puerto Rico, and Colombia. He is presumed lost in a shipwreck while sailing from Tahiti to Chile. Gualterio Looser Schallemberg (September 4, 1898, Santiago – July 22, 1982) was a Chilean botanist and engineer of Swiss parentage. He owned a factory that made agricultural implements. In 1928 Looser joined the American Fern Society, and started to publish papers on the pteridophytes of Chile. His herbarium containing ca. 8000 specimens was given to Conservatoire et Jardin botaniques de la Ville de Genève. Early life Born in Santiago, Chile, Gualterio Looser was the son of Swiss father Ulrich Looser and Swiss-French mother Laura Schallemberg, both originally from the Swiss city of Toggenburg. From a young age, he showed a keen interest in natural sciences and began to develop as a naturalist. He collected plants, insects, stones, and other objects that piqued his curiosity.
