Boquerón Bay
Boquerón Bay (Spanish: ''Bahía de Boquerón'') is a bay of the Mona Passage located on the coast of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. El Poblado de Boquerón, or just Boquerón for short, located in the ''barrio'' of the same name, is the main settlement located along the bay. The bay is a major tourist destination as it hosts the Boquerón Beach (''Balneario de Boquerón'') and Los Pozos Beach. Boquerón, Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico
Boquerón is a barrio in the municipality of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. Its population in 2010 was 5,373. The village of Boquerón, located on the Boquerón Bay is one of the main tourist attractions in the southwestern part of the island. In 2000, its population was 4,963. History Boquerón was in Spain's gazetteers until Puerto Rico was ceded by Spain in the aftermath of the Spanish–American War under the terms of the Treaty of Paris of 1898 and became an unincorporated territory of the United States. In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a census of Puerto Rico finding that the population of Boquerón was 1,185. People from the El Combate community in barrio Boquerón are known as ''mata con hacha'' ("those who kill with axes") based on an old folk tale about a fight over the ''salinas'', where those from Cabo Rojo fought with axes against people from the adjacent town of Lajas. Mona Passage
The Mona Passage () is a strait that separates the islands of Hispaniola and Puerto Rico. The Mona Passage connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean Sea and is an important shipping route between the Atlantic and the Panama Canal. The Mona Passage is long. El Poblado De Boquerón
El Poblado de Boquerón (Spanish for ''the settlement of Boquerón'') is a coastal village which represents the downtown or main urban nucleus of the ''barrio'' (district) Boquerón of Cabo Rojo, located on the northeast of Boquerón Bay. The village is a major tourist destination, and it is renown in Puerto Rico for its gastronomy, boathouses, beach, nightlife and its yearly pride parade. The area around the village of Boquerón was first populated by indigenous Taíno peoples and several native archaeological sites have been uncovered in its vicinity. The modern village originated as a fishing village (''villa pesquera'') and much of its fishing industry can still be seen today. Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge (Spanish: ''Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre de Cabo Rojo'') is an 1,836-acre National Wildlife Refuge located in southwestern Puerto Rico, in the municipality of Cabo Rojo. The refuge is a habitat for number of native bird species including the endangered yellow-shouldered blackbird, locally known as ''mariquita de Puerto Rico'' or ''capitán''. Many birds find their way to the refuge while migrating between North and South America, and more than 118 bird species have been recorded near the area.
