Bonxie (album)
Bonxie is the third studio album by British indie rock band Stornoway. It was released in April 2015 under Cooking Vinyl. The title refers to the great skua seabird, which in Shetland is colloquially referred to as a bonxie. It is one of several references to birds on the album, which also includes birdsong on many of the tracks, in a nod to lead singer Brian Briggs' academic background in ornithology and his love of birds in general. Track listing Critical reception The album was generally well received by the British press. Guardian critic Dave Simpson gave it five out of five stars, describing it as 'big music, which deserves the largest stage'. Paul Mardles in the same newspaper said it 'indicates the four-piece's future lies beyond the confines of jaunty folk-pop'. Stornoway are a United Kingdom, British indie folk band from the Cowley, Oxfordshire, Cowley area of Oxford. the band is led by ornithologist Brian Briggs as singer, guitarist, and main songwriter, with multi-instrumentalists Jon Ouin and Oli Steadman. Their sound incorporates an ever-changing selection of stringed instruments and Keyboard instrument, keyboards, supported by a typical pop backline of guitar, Drum kit, drums and bass guitar, embellished with avant-garde percussion including DIY hardware (saw & axe), cutlery, and Welsh gravel. Cooking Vinyl is a British independent record label, based in Acton, London, England. It was founded in 1986 by former manager and booking agent Martin Goldschmidt and his business partner Pete Lawrence. Goldschmidt remains the current owner and chairman, while Rob Collins is managing director. Great Skua
The great skua (''Stercorarius skua''), sometimes known by the name bonxie in Britain, is a large seabird in the skua family Stercorariidae. It is roughly the size of a herring gull. It mainly eats fish caught at the sea surface or taken from other birds. Taxonomy The great skua was described from the Faroe Islands and Iceland by the Danish zoologist Morten Thrane Brünnich in 1764 under the binomial name ''Catharacta skua''. It is now placed in the genus '' Stercorarius'' that was introduced by the French zoologist Mathurin Jacques Brisson in 1760. The English name and species name "skua" is believed to originate from the Faroese ''skúvur'' or ''skúgvur'' and is the only known bird name to originate from the Faroes that has come into regular use elsewhere.
