Bonifacius De Jonge
250px, Crest of the Heerlijkheid Oosterland Bonifacius de Jonge, ''Heer'' of Oosterland and Heer-Jansland in Zeeland ( Zierikzee, 1567 – Middelburg, June 1625) was ''raadpensionaris'' of Zeeland province in the Dutch Republic between 1615 and 1625. Career De Jonge was the eldest son of Jan de Jonge van Oosterland, '' burgemeester'' of the city of Zierikzee, and Cornelia Boenze. He first became pensionary of his native city and was appointed Secretary of the States of Zeeland on 24 March 1599. He was ''raadpensionaris'' of Zeeland from 18 February 1615 until his death in 1625. Jhr. Johannes Cornelis de Jonge (9 May 1793 in Zierikzee – 12 June 1853 in The Hague) was a Dutch ''Rijksarchivaris'' (Chief Archivist of the Dutch National Archives), historian, and politician. He is best known for his encyclopedic ''Geschiedenis van het Nederlandsche Zeewezen'', a naval history of the Netherlands that was based on the Dutch naval archives, a large part of which were destroyed in a fire in the archives of the Dutch Department of the Navy in 1844. By default therefore this history had to come in the place of the lost primary documents. Personal life De Jonge was born in an old "patrician" family of Zeeland notables (his ancestor Bonifacius de Jonge had been ''Raadpensionaris'' of Zeeland from 1615 to 1625), for which reason he and his family received the aristocratic title of Jonkheer, when king William I of the Netherlands reorganized the Dutch aristocracy in 1814. A pensionary was a name given to the leading functionary and legal adviser of the principal town corporations in the Low Countries because they received a salary or pension. History The office originated in Flanders. Initially, the role was referred to as clerk or advocate. The earliest pensionaries in the county of Holland were those of Dordrecht (1468) and of Haarlem (1478). The pensionary conducted the town's legal business and was the secretary of the town council and its representative and spokesman at the meetings of the Provincial States. ''heerlijkheden''; also called ''heerschap''; Latin: ''Dominium'') was a landed estate that served as the lowest administrative and judicial unit in rural areas in the Dutch-speaking Low Countries before 1800.
