The 25 provinces of Sweden () are historical, geographical and cultural regions. They have no administrative function, but retain their own cultural identities, dialects and folklore. Several were administrative subdivisions until 1634, when they were replaced by the counties of Sweden (). Some were conquered later on from Denmark–Norway. Others, like the provinces of Finland, have been lost. In some cases, the county and province borders correspond almost exactly, as with Blekinge and Blekinge County. Halland
Halland () is one of the traditional provinces of Sweden (''landskap''), on the western coast of Götaland, southern Sweden. It borders Västergötland, Småland, Skåne, Scania and the sea of Kattegat. Halland County (, ) is a county ('' län'') on the western coast of Sweden. It corresponds roughly to the cultural and historical province of Halland. The capital is Halmstad. Varberg Municipality () is a municipality in Halland County, in southwest Sweden. Its seat is in Varberg. It was formed in 1971 through the amalgamation of the ''City of Varberg'' and the surrounding rural municipalities. There are 25 original local government entities included in the municipality. 5,000 people are commuting out from the municipality, mainly to Gothenburg and Falkenberg. 3,200 people are commuting into Falkenberg. Kattegat
The Kattegat (; ; ) is a sea area bounded by the peninsula of Jutland in the west, the Danish straits islands of Denmark and the Baltic Sea to the south and the Swedish provinces of Bohuslän, Västergötland, Halland and Scania in Sweden in the east. The Baltic Sea drains into the Kattegat through the Danish straits. The sea area is a continuation of the Skagerrak and may be seen as a bay of the North Sea and North Atlantic Ocean, though this is not the case in traditional Scandinavian usage. The Kattegat is a rather shallow sea and can be dangerous to navigate due to many sandy, stony reefs and the tricky shifting currents. In modern times, artificial seabed channels have been dug, many reefs have been dredged either by sand pumping or boulder clearance, and a well-developed light signaling network has been installed to protect the heavy international traffic on this small sea. Getterön
Getterön is a peninsula in Varberg Municipality, Halland County, Sweden, immediately northwest of the municipal seat Varberg. Getterön was an island until 1936, when the sound (geography), sound between Getterön and the mainland was filled out and a road was built. Etymology The name Getterön is very old. It is derived from the Viking Age or even earlier. The spelling has varied, for example ''Gederöen'' or ''Gäderöen'' in 1645, ''Geterholmen'' in 1691, ''Getter ön'' in 1733, ''Geterön'' 1734 and ''Gietterön'' in 1752. The current spelling ''Getterön'' was not widely recognized until the 1900s, but appears in documents as early as in the 18th century and used in the public land registration, land registry in 1825. The name's meaning is unclear. Probably there is an etymological link with the nearby ''Getakärr'', a Middle Ages, medieval city that was a predecessor of Varberg. Balgö
Balgö is an island and a nature reserve in Kattegat, off Tångaberg in Varberg Municipality, Sweden. Balgö is the largest island in Halland. The nature reserve was established in 1950. Some smaller islands around Balgö are also included in the nature reserve. Balgö is an important breeding and resting place for different birds, for example little tern, pied avocet and common eider. In the winters, there are white-tailed eagles in the area. 135 species of lichens have been found on Balgö.
