Boleophthalmus Pectinirostris
''Boleophthalmus pectinirostris'', commonly known as the great blue spotted mudskipper, is a species of mudskipper native to the north-western Pacific Ocean. It can be found on the coastlines of Japan, eastern China, Sumatra, Malaysia, Taiwan and the Korea, Korean Peninsula. Description Individuals of ''B. pectinirostris'' are predominantly greenish-grey in colour, with prominent sky blue speckles across their body, including their fins and on the skin below their eyes. They can grow all the way up to . Anatomy Epidermis ''B. pectinirostis'' is amphibious, and breathes through its epidermis, a process known as cutaneous respiration. A study examining specimens from Jeollanam-do, South Korea, found that the epidermis of ''B. pectinirostis'' has three layers. The outermost layer consists of flattened, Squamous, polygonal cells in one to eight layers of cells. The small cells are 5–7 μm by 5–8 μm, arranged in regular, compact rows on the outermost region of the layer, ... Boleophthalmus Boddarti
''Boleophthalmus boddarti'', commonly known as Boddart's goggle-eyed goby, is a species of mudskipper native to the Indo-Pacific, and the type species of the genus ''Boleophthalmus''. In Vietnam, this species is called "Cá Bống Sao", which means "star sky goby". Taxonomy Etymology The specific epithet, ''boddarti'', is in reference to Pierre Boddaërt, who collected the holotype for the species. Description Like other mudskippers, ''Boleophthalmus boddarti'' is capable of moving on land, and uses its pectoral and pelvic fins to move about on the surface of tidal flats in its native range at low tide. The fish is boldly patterned, with rows of blue spots along its flanks and cheeks, as well as dark bands running down its body. Anatomy ''B. boddarti'' has fused pelvic fins, as in its fin rays are interconnected and merged with its skin, which aid in its walking across the mudflats it lives in. Its large pelvic ray fin bone structure provides ''B. boddarti'' with a sitting pa ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Boleophthalmus Birdsongi
''Boleophthalmus birdsongi'', also known as Birdsong's goggle-eyed goby, North Australian great mudskipper (from ), and Birdsong's mudskipper, is a species of mudskipper. It occurs in the mudflats of Northern Territory, Australia. Taxonomy Etymology The specific epithet ''birdsongi'' is derived from the surname of American ichthyologist Ray S. Birdsong, in honor of his work regarding gobioid osteology and systematics. Description ''Boleophthalmus birdsongi'' have a cylindrical head of similar width and depth, compressed body, and subterminal (downward-turned) mouth. Its nape and body are covered with cycloid scales. They have 49 upper jaw teeth, including 2–3 teeth twice the size of the others on either side of the symphysis, and 51 lower jaw teeth, which are compressed and about the same size. The largest specimen of ''B. birdsongi'' caught in a study of Australian mudskipper species was in standard length and in total length. Colouration Individuals of ''B. birdsongi'' ... Mudskippers
Mudskippers are any of the 23 extant species of amphibious fish from the subfamily Oxudercinae of the goby family Oxudercidae. They are known for their unusual body shapes, preferences for semiaquatic habitats, limited terrestrial locomotion and jumping, and the ability to survive prolonged periods of time both in and out of water. Mudskippers can grow up to long, and most are a brownish green colour that ranges anywhere from dark to light. During mating seasons, the males will also develop brightly coloured spots in order to attract females, which can be red, green or blue. Unlike other fish, the mudskipper's eyes protrude from the top of its flat head. Their most noticeable feature however is their side pectoral fins that are located more forward and under their elongated body. These fins are jointed and function similarly to limbs, which allow the mudskipper to crawl from place to place. Although having the typical body form of any other gobiid fish, these front fins allow the ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
