Medhane Alem Cathedral, Addis Ababa
Medhane Alem Cathedral (), whose name means "Saviour of the World", is an Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo cathedral in Bole Medhanealem, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Built in 1990's, it is the second largest cathedral in the whole of Africa and the largest in Ethiopia. The church, along with Gennet Mariam, is decorated with external columns type of modern architecture of Ethiopia. Background Bole Medhane Alem Cathedral was constructed in 1924 and completed in 1931 under the guidance of Emperor Haile Selassie. The cathedral was designed by an Indian architect named Zenaye Workeneh, blending Ethiopian architecture with European, and becoming the second largest cathedral in Ethiopia after Holy Trinity and the second largest cathedral in Africa. Akaky Kaliti (Amharic: አቃቂ ቃሊቲ ክፍለ ከተማ), also spelled Akaki Kality, is a district (sub-city) of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. As of 2011 its population was of 195,273. Addis Ababa Bole International Airport is an international airport in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It is in the Bole district, southeast of the city centre and north of Bishoftu. The airport was formerly known as ''Haile Selassie I International Airport''. It is the main hub of Ethiopian Airlines, the national airline that serves destinations in Ethiopia and throughout the African continent, as well as connections to Asia, Europe, North America and South America.
