''Gods'' ( pl, Bogowie) is a 2014 Polish biographical feature film directed by Łukasz Palkowski. It is based on the life and career of Polish cardiac surgeon Zbigniew Religa, who performed the first successful heart transplant in Poland in 1987. The movie received the ''Golden Lions'' award for best film at the 39th Gdynia Film Festival (2014) and the ''Eagle'' at the Polish Film Awards (2015). Production of the film took place in autumn 2013. Łukasz Palkowski
Łukasz Palkowski (born 2 March 1976, Warsaw) is a Polish film director and screenwriter. Life and career He initially studied at the National Film School in Łódź but dropped out. In 2007, he made his first full-length feature film entitled ''Rezerwat''. The film tells the story of a photographer living in the Praga District of Warsaw who becomes infatuated with a local hairdresser and as a result comes into conflict with a criminal who shares a flat with her. He received an award for best debut at the 32nd Gdynia Film Festival. In 2011, he directed ''Wojna żeńsko-męska'' based on a novel by Hanna Samson, which received much less favourable reviews from critics. In 2014, Palkowski directed his most critically acclaimed film ''Gods'' starring Tomasz Kot and based on the life of Zbigniew Religa, a surgeon who carried out the first heart transplant in Poland. The Gdynia Film Festival (until 2011: Polish Film Festival, Polish: ''Festiwal Polskich Filmów Fabularnych w Gdyni'') is an annual film festival first held in Gdańsk (1974–1986), now held in Gdynia, Poland. It has taken place every year since 1974, except in 1982 and 1983 when Poland was under martial law. Zbigniew Religa
Zbigniew Eugeniusz Religa (; 16 December 1938 – 8 March 2009) was a prominent Polish cardiac surgeon and politician. Career as doctor Religa finished his studies at the Medical University of Warsaw in 1963. From 1966 to 1980 he worked in the ''Szpital Wolski'' in Warsaw, where he qualified in surgery. In 1973, he visited New York City to train in vascular surgery, and in 1975 he trained in cardiac surgery in Detroit. In 1973, he obtained a Ph. D. degree; in 1981 he finished his habilitation, achieving academic recognition similar to an associate professor or senior lecturer. From 1980 to 1984, Religa lectured at the Warsaw Institute of Cardiology. In 1984 he obtained a chair in cardiac surgery and directed the Cardiosurgical Clinic in Zabrze, in 1990 he became full professor at the Silesian Medical University in Katowice, being its rector from 1997 to 1999. Rafał Zawierucha (born 12 October 1986) is a Polish film and theatre actor, best known for his role of Roman Polanski in the 2019 Quentin Tarantino film ''Once Upon a Time in Hollywood''. Jan Aleksander Englert (born 11 May 1943) is a Polish film actor. He has appeared in more than 60 films since 1957. Since 2003 he has served as Artistic Director of the National Theatre in Warsaw. Biography In 1957 at the age of 14 he made his film debut in Andrzej Wajda's ''Kanał''. In 1964, Englert graduated from the Aleksander Zelwerowicz National Academy of Dramatic Art in Warsaw and started working in the Polish Theatre, where at first he mostly played supporting roles. Marian Opania (, born 1 February 1943) is a Polish film actor and singer. He has appeared in more than 50 films since 1965. Biography He was born on 1 February 1943 in Puławy as the second son of Julian and Jadwiga. His father was a forester and an infantry officer in the Polish Army, he died in the Warsaw Uprising. In the years 1964–1971 he performed at the Classic Theater in Warsaw, then at the Studio Theater (1971–1977), the Kwadrat Theater (1978) and the Komedia Theater (1979–1981). Zbigniew Zamachowski (; born 17 July 1961) is a Polish actor. Life and career He was born on 17 July 1961 in Brzeziny near Łódź. Zamachowski graduated from the actor's faculty of the National Film School in Łódź. He began his acting career in 1981 and in 1989 had a co-starring role in Part Ten ''(Thou Shalt Not Covet Thy Neighbor's Goods)'' of director Krzysztof Kieślowski's film series, ''Dekalog''.
