Bogey Hole
The Bogey Hole, also known as the Commandant's Baths, is a heritage-listed Sea bathing, sea bath in Newcastle, New South Wales, Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia. It is thought to be the oldest surviving European construction in the city area. The pool was hewn from a Hawkesbury sandstone, sandstone/Conglomerate (geology), conglomerate rock shelf at the base of cliffs near Shepherds Hill. James Thomas Morisset, Lieutenant-Colonel James Thomas Morisset, the Commandant of Newcastle (1818–23), ordered the construction of the pool by convicts in Australia, convict labour in about 1820 for his own use. The word "Bogie" or "Bogey" purportedly comes from the Tharawal language, Dharawal language meaning "to bathe" or "a place to bathe" It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 21 November 2003. Newcomen Street Corporation Baths
Newcomen Street Corporation Baths were Public bathing, public baths in Newcastle, New South Wales, Newcastle, Australia. Opened in 1888, ongoing financial and hygiene problems resulted in the closure of the baths in 1906. The baths provided a place for the public to bathe in sea water while enjoying the health benefits in a safe manner. The building was converted into an arcade in 1934, and parts of the original façade are still visible today. History In January 1877 Wickam Council announced that new public baths would be built the following summer.  The people of Newcastle had petitioned the council to build the public baths to appease fears about public safety and modesty. Newcastle's beaches were considered a dangerous place to swim, despite the belief that bathing in the sea was good for health that was common in the 1800's. The council allowed swimming at the beach for no charge between 8 pm - 5 am, and many men were arrested for swimming outside these hours. ...
