Departments Of Niger
The regions of Niger are subdivided into 63 Department (country subdivision), departments (). Before the devolution program on 1999–2005, these departments were styled arrondissements. Confusingly, the next level up (regions) had, before 2002-2005 been styled departments. Prior to a revision in 2011, there had been 36 departments. Until 2010, arrondissements remained a proposed subdivision of departments, though none were used. The decentralisation process, begun in the 1995-1999 period replaced appointed Prefects at Departmental or Arrondissement level with elected councils, first elected in 1999. Dosso Region
Dosso is one of the seven regions of Niger. The region has an area of , with a population of 2,754,500 as of 2020. History The region of Dosso is the historic centre of the Dosso Kingdom, which had its capital at Dosso. Today the palace of the Sultanate of Dosso remains as a symbol of the aristocratic ruling class of the kingdom. The region was traditionally populated by Zarma people who are believed to have migrated from the Lake Débo area of what is now Mali during the time of the Songhai Empire. Birni N'Gaouré
Birni N'Gaouré (or Birnin Gaouré) is a town located in the Dosso Region in southwest Niger. A town of over ten thousand, it is the departmental seat of Boboye Department, and is the main town of the fertile farming region in which it is located. "Birni", in the name of the town, derives from the Hausa language word for a walled city. The town has a station on the Niamey - Dosso railway line.
