Bobong Velez
Carlos "Bobong" Velez (November 4, 1945 – July 3, 2017) was a Filipino TV producer who owned the Vintage Television, the network broadcast the PBA in the 1990s, and the Blow-by-Blow that discovered Manny Pacquiao. Career A graduate of De La Salle University, together with his brother Ricky, Bobong Velez established Vintage Television (VTV) in 1978, and started broadcasting Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) games from 1982 until 1999. When he started in bidding in 1982, his VTV paid Php 5.2 million, and Joe Cantada as one of its main play-by-play. In the 1990s, Velez assembled coverage with the likes of future PBA commissioner Noli Eala, Chino Trinidad, Sev Sarmenta as play-by-play, while columnist Quinito Henson, Andy Jao, and other guests panelist (like coaches) serves as color commentators. Noli Eala
Jose Emmanuel "Noli" Macasaet Eala is a Filipino sports executive and disbarred lawyer who served as the 11th chairperson of the Philippine Sports Commission from August 30 to December 28, 2022. He previously served as the sixth commissioner of the Philippine Basketball Association from 2003 to 2007. Before he became the commissioner of the league, he was a play-by-play commentator of Viva-Vintage Sports, which broadcasts the PBA Games, from the early 1990s until 2002. He was elected as commissioner of the league in 2002 after his predecessor, Emilio "Jun" Bernardino, retired from his post. Ronnie Nathanielsz
Ronald Fredrick William Nathanielsz (November 3, 1935 – November 11, 2016), was a Sri Lankan-born Filipino sports journalist, commentator and analyst. Early life Nathanielsz was born in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in 1935. He was the eldest son of Elmo Nathanielsz and his wife Phyllis (née Labrooy) of Colombo. He and his brother-in-law, Annesley 'Bunny' Joseph, belonged to the same boxing club in their youth. They trained under former Ceylon flyweight champion Henry Young, who thought Ronnie could become an Olympic boxer. However, at age 17 or 18, Nathanielsz was diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat, ending his boxing career. Career In 1965, Nathanielsz was working for radio station DZHP. Andrew H. Jao Jr. (born September 23, 1953) is a Filipino basketball executive and color commentator. Early life Jao studied at the De La Salle University since elementary until college. He was a college buddy of Tommy Manotoc. Career Coaching and executive Jao started in 1978 in Solidmills (a team in MICAA) as its assistant manager. Joaquin M. Henson (born October 13, 1950), also known as Quinito Henson, is a Filipino sports analyst and television color commentator. His newspaper column, ''Sporting Chance'', has appeared in the ''Philippine Star'' since the 1980s. Referred to as "The Dean", coined by TV commentator Randy Sacdalan. He himself is known to give nicknames to various athletes, such as "Captain Lionheart" for Alvin Patrimonio and "Tower of Power" for Benjie Paras. Career After graduating with a degree in AB Communication in 1978 at Ateneo, he pursued a career in fields like advertising, copywriting, business, and freelance work. After those jobs, he started his career at St. Joseph's College Quezon City then the University of the Philippines Diliman as a college instructor, and later for Ateneo in 1985. One of this notable students in Ateneo was Mico Halili, a colleague in PBA and UAAP coverages. Jose J. Cantada, better known as "Smokin'" Joe Cantada, (March 15, 1942 – March 22, 1992) was a Filipino TV host, anchor & commentator. He died of lung cancer in March 1992. He distinguished himself with his smooth baritone voice and his flawless use of figures of speech and idioms in calling sports events.
