Bobby Goldsmith Foundation
Bobby Goldsmith Foundation (BGF) is an Australian HIV charity based in Sydney, New South Wales. It aims to provide practical, emotional and financial assistance to people living with HIV and currently operates in New South Wales and Adelaide. It was formed in July 1984 from a trust fund organised after the death of Bobby Goldsmith, who was the first person in New South Wales to be publicly recognised as having died of AIDS-related illness. It is one of Australia's oldest HIV charities. History Shortly after its formation, BGF became a founding member of the New South Wales AIDS Action Committee. In 1985, BGF assisted in funding the AIDS Council of New South Wales's 'Rubba Me' safe sex campaign after the NSW Government withdrew its support. Bobby Goldsmith
Bobby Goldsmith (8 March 1946 – 18 June 1984) was one of Australia's early victims of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Goldsmith was an Australian athlete and active gay community member who won 17 medals in swimming at the first Gay Olympics, in San Francisco in 1982. Goldsmith was assisted by a network of friends who organised care for him, allowing him to live independently during his illness, until his death on Monday 18 June 1984. Michael Kirby (judge)
Michael Donald Kirby (born 18 March 1939) is an Australian jurist and academic who is a former Justice of the High Court of Australia, serving from 1996 to 2009. He has remained active in retirement; in May 2013 he was appointed by the United Nations Human Rights Council to lead an inquiry into human rights abuses in North Korea, which reported in February 2014. Ita Clare Buttrose (born 17 January 1942) is an Australian TV network chairperson, television and radio personality, author and former magazine editor, publishing executive and newspaper journalist. She was the founding editor of '' Cleo'', a high-circulation magazine aimed at women aged 20 to 40 that was frank about sexuality (and, in its infancy, featured nude male centrefolds) and, later, the editor of the more conventional ''The Australian Women's Weekly''. She was the youngest person to be appointed editor of ''The Weekly'', which was then, per capita, the largest-selling magazine in the world. Simon Dunn
Simon Dunn (27 July 1987 – 21 January 2023) was an Australian bobsledder and amateur rugby player. Raised in Wollongong, in 2014, he was the first openly gay male to represent any country in the sport of bobsled. After several years in London, he lived in Sydney and played amateur rugby before his death. Career Simon Dunn grew up playing rugby league south of Sydney, in Wollongong. Struggling with his own sexuality and life in sport, he initially quit when he first came out but resumed playing after returning to Sydney from Canada when he became a player for the Sydney Convicts Rugby club.
