Bob Russell (television Presenter)
Bob Russell (January 1, 1908 – January 24, 1998) was an United States, American entertainer, best known for hosting the Miss America beauty contest, pageant during the years of 1940 to 1946, 1948 to 1950 and 1954. He also served as Master of Ceremonies, emcee for the Miss Universe, Miss World, and Miss Canada pageants. Biography Bob Russell's father was a Russian-born baker. His family moved to New York City, New York at age nine and he began his career appearing in Broadway theatre, Broadway musicals in the 1920s. In the 1930s, he moved on to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, where he became a local star as the singing master of ceremonies at the elegant Cafe Marguery in the old Adelphia Hotel. In 1952 Russell co-created, directed and hosted the very first Miss Universe pageant in Long Beach, California, Long Beach, California, and continued with the pageant through 1957. ''Name That Tune'' is an American television music game show. Originally created and produced by orchestra conductor Harry Salter and his wife Roberta Semple Salter, the series features contestants competing to correctly identify songs being played by an on-stage orchestra or band. ''Name That Tune'' premiered on the NBC Radio Network in 1952, where it aired until 1954, and made the move to television in 1953 on the same network. CBS picked up the television series in the summer of 1953 and carried it through 1959. A revival in 1974 was much more successful. Airing weekly, the 1974 syndicated offering used a new show format and, beginning in 1976, offered a top prize of $100,000 to a lucky champion (after which the show became known as ''The $100,000 Name That Tune''). ''Yours for a Song'' is an American game show created by Bob Russell that aired on ABC from 1961–63, with Bert Parks as the host and Johnny Gilbert as the announcer. The series, which filmed in New York City, aired in primetime from November 14, 1961, to September 18, 1962, and in daytime from December 4, 1961, to March 29, 1963. This program was replaced by the soap opera, ''General Hospital'', which was ABC's first "modern-day" soap the following Monday. Gameplay Two contestants alternated picking songs, then singing their lyrics, each with six words missing. For each correct word the contestant filled in, he/she won a cash award ($10 in daytime, $20 in nighttime); if the contestant was wrong, no money was awarded for that word and Parks would gently prod them in the direction of the word until it was correctly guessed. ''Time Will Tell'' is an early American game show that aired on the DuMont Television Network Fridays at 10:30 pm ET from August 27 to October 15, 1954. The host was Ernie Kovacs.McNeil, Alex (1980). ''Total Television'' (4th ed.). New York: Penguin Books. . Don Russell was the announcer, and Eddie Hatrak provided music. Game play involved three contestants answering questions in 90-second rounds, timed with a large hourglass. The sustaining program, produced and distributed by the network, aired on most DuMont affiliates on Fridays at 10:30 pm Eastern Time, replacing '' Gamble on Love'' which was also hosted by Kovacs in the same time slot. ''Versatile Varieties'', also known as ''Bonnie Maid Versatile Varieties'' and ''Bonny Maid Versatile Varieties'', was a TV series that ran from 1949 to 1951 on NBC, CBS and ABC under three different formats. The sponsor was Bonnie Maid Linoleum. Program formats *On NBC, from August 29, 1949, to January 19, 1951, on Fridays from 9pm to 9:30pm ET, was a variety show set in a nightclub, where those not performing in the various acts would be seen sitting at tables on the sidelines.
