Bob Blank
Bob Blank is an American music producer and prolific sound engineer who ran Blank Tape Studios which opened in New York in 1976. Artists he has worked with include, James Chance, Kid Creole, Cristina, Lizzy Mercier-Descloux, Sandra Feva, Instant Funk, Lydia Lunch, Nelson Ned, Jimmy Sabater, Sun Ra and more. Background Bob Blank had an interest in electronics, and at the age of twelve, he built a high-frequency radio transmitter which didn't go down well with the Federal Communications Commission. He was a guitarist, and at age eighteen he was in a local band. They made a record which was his first recording experience. He originally wanted to be a session guitarist but following his move to New York, he realized that he didn't have what it took to get in. ZE Records
ZE Records was a New York–based record label, started in 1978 by Michael Zilkha and Michel Esteban, and closed in 1984. It was reestablished by Esteban in 2003; its website was last updated in 2019. History Michael Zilkha (b. 1954) is a British-born Oxford graduate of Iraqi descent, the son of Selim Zilkha, former owner of Mothercare, a major UK retail company, and the stepson of Cabinet member Lord Lever. In the mid-1970s, Zilkha worked in the New York publishing industry and was a contributor to the ''Village Voice''. "I Got My Mind Made Up (You Can Get It Girl)" is a single by the disco band Instant Funk, recorded and released in 1978, which was later included in their self-titled sophomore album. Song Background The original production of this song was done on 8 tracks and was a simple 3 minute R&B song. It was transferred to 24 track tape at Blank Tapes, NYC and work began on it by the producer Bunny Sigler and engineer Bob Blank. Among other things, Bunny brought in a woman to say 'say what?' throughout the record. Standing behind her, his directions ("scream") were amplified and used as part of the production. Remixing was done manually (no computerization) and was attempted by Walter Gibbons, Ken Cayre (the owner of Salsoul Records) and finally by DJ Larry Levan. Recorded in Blank Tapes's old studio A, on a console that was not automated, the remixes were created with splicing tape, playing a small section of the music and then resetting the console, then recording the next piece. ''Record World'' magazine was one of three major weekly music industry trade magazines in the United States, with ''Billboard'' and '' Cashbox''. It was founded in 1946 as ''Music Vendor''. In 1964, it was changed to ''Record World'' under the ownership of Sid Parnes and Bob Austin. It ceased publication on April 10, 1982.
