Blue Ribbon Pairs
The Edgar Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs (or simply the Blue Ribbon Pairs) is a national bridge championship held at the fall American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) North American Bridge Championship (NABC). The event is restricted to those that have won a blue ribbon qualification (usually by placing in the top two of an unrestricted regional event) and is generally considered, with the Norman Kay Platinum Pairs, as one of the two hardest pairs event on the ACBL calendar. The Blue Ribbon Pairs is a six session MP pairs event, two qualifying sessions, two semi-final sessions and two final sessions that takes place over three days, typically starting on the first Tuesday of the NABC. Along with the Von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs at the summer NABC and the Norman Kay Platinum Pairs at the spring NABC, the events provide one marquee pairs championship at each of the three NABCs. The American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) is a governing body for contract bridge in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Bermuda. He started playing bridge while he was a chemistry student at the University of California; as result of a self-inflicted hand injury, he had to postpone the final exams and started playing bridge as a pastime. Bridge became his major interest and he devoted his subsequent life to it. In 1968, he was invited by Ira Corn to join the newly formed Dallas Aces team. He formed a partnership with Bobby Goldman, with whom he played a 2/1 game forcing system. They started by winning several North American Bridge Championships and, after a long Italian Blue Team reign, returned the world crown to America by winning the Bermuda Bowls in 1970 and 1971. Lewis Lawrence Mathe (March 27, 1915 – March 10, 1986) was an American world champion bridge player and administrator from Canoga Park, California. Mathe, a native of New York, served in the Army during World War II; he enlisted two days before the attack on Pearl Harbor. He died in Los Angeles in 1986. Harold Harkavy
Harold Harkavy (November 29, 1915 – November 29, 1965) was an American bridge player, considered one of the world's best at play. He was originally from New York City, and served in Italy and Africa in World War II. He later lived in Miami Beach, Florida. Harkavy was married to Marie Franko Harkavy and had a son, Robert. Harkavy died on his 50th birthday of pancreatitis in a French Hospital in San Francisco, where he had gone for the Fall National Championships. Dorothy Hayden
Dorothy Hayden Truscott (November 3, 1925 – July 4, 2006) was an American bridge player, winner of four world championships and the top-ranked woman for many years. In the late 1960s, she authored two books on the game and later co-authored two with her husband Alan Truscott. Her 1966 book, ''Bid Better, Play Better'' is considered a classic and was progressively updated. Early and later life Truscott was born as Dorothy Johnson in New York City. Her parents, Dorothy and Reginald Johnson, were keen bridge players and taught their daughter the game when she was 7 years old. Truscott would normally watch her mother play the game, but her father would allow her to bid and play his hand when he poured drinks. One evening a player was late, and she was allowed to fill in. Margaret Wagar (April 6, 1902 – January 6, 1990) was an American bridge player from Delaware, Ohio and Atlanta, Georgia. Biography The premier American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) annual championship for women teams since 1976 is the Wagar Women's Knockout Teams, named for Wagar. Previously it was the Women's Board-a-Match Teams, which she won six times including four in a row from 1943 to 1946 with identical teammates Emily Folline, Helen Sobel, and Sally Young. Her teams also finished second or tied for second ten times in 15 years from 1950 to 1964! Wagar also won the premier championship for women pairs four years in a row with Kay Rhodes, the 1955 to 1958 Whitehead Women's Pairs tournaments (and were partners on the runner-up women team seven years in a row from 1952 to 1958). Helen Elizabeth Sobel Smith (''née'' Martin; May 22, 1909 – September 11, 1969) was an American bridge player. She is said to have been the "greatest woman bridge player of all time" and "may well have been the most brilliant card player of all time." She won 35 North American Bridge Championships, and was the first woman to play in the Bermuda Bowl. She was a long-time partner of Charles Goren. Gavin Wolpert (born 1984 in Toronto, Ontario) is a Canadian-American professional bridge player. Personal life Gavin Wolpert was born in Toronto, Ontario to a bridge playing family. Jenny Wolpert
Jenny Wolpert née Ryman (born mid-1980s) is a Swedish American professional bridge player and teacher. Before emigrating to North America she played as Jenny Ryman (to 2007). Wolpert is a world champion, having been a member of the USA2 team that won the Venice Cup in 2013. Jenny Ryman was born in Sweden. She played for the Sweden women in two world championship tournaments, the 2004 World Team Olympiad and the 2005 Venice Cup. In the European Bridge League championships she played for Sweden teams from 2002 (Schools, or under-21) to 2006 (Women). She is married to Gavin Wolpert, also a professional bridge player. They have three children and live primarily in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
