Blodwen
''Blodwen'' () is an opera in three acts composed in 1878 by Dr Joseph Parry to a libretto by Richard Davies (Mynyddog), Richard Davies. It was the first opera written in the Welsh language. Reception The opera premiered on 21 May 1878 at the Temperance Hall in Aberystwyth, with Parry himself conducting. It was well-received, with one reporter from the Welsh-language magazine ''Y Faner'' going as far as to say that the opera was the "most charming piece of music" he had heard. Following the first performance in Aberystwyth, ''Blodwen'' was taken on tour through the counties of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire, and was performed by the Welsh Representative Choir in Bristol and at Alexandra Palace in London. They travelled by train from Aberdare to London, and Parry wrote to the press to say that people were welcome to join the singers on the journey. Joseph Parry
Joseph Parry (21 May 1841 – 17 February 1903) was a Welsh composer and musician. Born in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, he is best known as the composer of "Myfanwy" and the hymn tune "Aberystwyth (hymn tune), Aberystwyth". Parry was also the first Welshman to compose an opera; his composition, ''Blodwen'', was the first opera in the Welsh language. Born into a large family, Parry left school to work in the local coal mines when he was nine years of age. He then went to work at the Cyfarthfa Ironworks, where his father was also employed. In 1854 the family emigrated to the United States, settling at Danville, Pennsylvania, where Parry again found employment at an iron works. Though Parry had a great interest in music, he had no opportunity to study it until there was a temporary closure of the Rough and Ready Iron Works. Qualiton Records
Qualiton is a frequently used record-label name in different countries. There have been and there still are several labels known as Qualiton, in particular the Hungarian state-owned corporation during the post-World War II years in Europe. The company changed its name to Hungaroton in the mid-1960s, but the Qualiton label remained for gypsy music and operetta repertoire. Other records labels bought the Qualiton license from Hungaroton and eventually became their own labels. Discos Qualiton and Qualiton South Wales are examples of the latter. Qualiton, South Wales Qualiton Records was a small record label which produced shellac and vinyl records in the 1950s until at least 1963 at Pontardawe, in the Swansea Valley in South Wales. Llew Llwyfo
Lleu Llaw Gyffes (), sometimes incorrectly spelled as Llew Llaw Gyffes, is a hero of Welsh mythology. He appears most prominently in the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi, the tale of Math fab Mathonwy, which tells the tale of his birth, his marriage, his death, his resurrection and his accession to the throne of Gwynedd. He is a warrior and magician, invariably associated with his uncle Gwydion. He is widely understood to be the Welsh equivalent of the Irish Lugh and the Gaulish Lugus. It has been suggested that Lleu, like Pryderi, is related to the divine son figure of Mabon ap Modron. Operas
Opera is a form of Western theatre in which music is a fundamental component and dramatic roles are taken by singers. Snowdon
Snowdon (), or (), is a mountain in Snowdonia in North Wales. It has an elevation of above sea level, which makes it both the highest mountain in Wales and the highest in the British Isles south of the Scottish Highlands. Snowdon is designated a national nature reserve for its rare flora and fauna, and is located within Snowdonia National Park. The rocks that form Snowdon were produced by volcanoes in the Ordovician period, and the massif has been extensively sculpted by glaciation, forming the pyramidal peak of Snowdon and the arêtes of Crib Goch and Y Lliwedd. Maelor
The Maelor is an area of north-east Wales along the border with England. It is now entirely part of Wrexham County Borough. Sain (Welsh for ''Audio'', ), in full – ''Sain (Recordiau) Cyf.'' (Audio (Records) Ltd) is a Welsh record label, which took part in the Welsh folk revival. History Sain was founded in Cardiff in 1969 by singers and songwriters Dafydd Iwan and and businessman Brian Morgan Edwards, as a home for Welsh-language rock and folk music, which was otherwise finding it difficult to 'break through' in the UK market. Sain is regarded as being the first Welsh record company to be self-sufficient in terms of independence from other British companies, and laid the foundation for subsequent Welsh labels.
