Bliss House (Denver, Colorado)
The Bliss House in the West Colfax neighborhood of Denver, Colorado, is a Queen Anne-style house built in 1890. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 as Building at 1389 Stuart Street. It is a two-and-a-half-story house designed by architects Lang & Pugh with exterior mostly covered by fishscale shingles. It has been described as "basically Queen Anne in style but with great originality of detail.... The design is complex with a combination of bays, unusual windows and a dramatic multi-planed roofline." It was home of Dr. Gerald BlissSpelling as "Geral Bliss" used in NRHP nomination document and History Colorado summary, but spelling as "Gerald Bliss" used iHistory of Colfax Avenue and his second wife "for all of their married life, both dying in 1945. Lang & Pugh
William A. Lang (1846–1897) was an architect active in Denver, Colorado from 1885 to 1893. On his own or in partnership, he designed a number of buildings that survive and are listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Lang partnered with Marshall Pugh to form Lang & Pugh in 1889. The firm also employed Reinhard Schuetze for a time. Lang's business interests, like his father's, often faced financial stumbles and may have collapsed following the Panic of 1893. He moved to Illinois and in 1897. and His medical records describe him as suffering from severe depression and as manic depressive. Lang was born in Ohio in 1846. Early in his career, he designed at least three buildings in Kansas including Albion School in Albion, Nebraska. He moved to Denver in 1886. Queen Anne Architecture In The United States
Queen Anne style architecture was one of a number of popular Victorian architectural styles that emerged in the United States during the period from roughly 1880 to 1910. Popular there during this time, it followed the Second Empire and Stick styles and preceded the Richardsonian Romanesque and Shingle styles. Sub-movements of Queen Anne include the Eastlake movement. The style bears almost no relationship to the original Queen Anne style architecture in Britain (a toned-down version of English Baroque that was used mostly for gentry houses) which appeared during the time of Queen Anne, who reigned from 1702 to 1714, nor of Queen Anne Revival (which appeared in the latter 19th century there). The American style covers a wide range of picturesque buildings with "free Renaissance" (non- Gothic Revival) details, rather than being a specific formulaic style in its own right. West Colfax, Denver
West Colfax is a neighborhood of Denver, Colorado. The neighborhood is located in the West Denver area. In 2015 the population of the neighborhood was 9,120, and there were 4,055 housing units. Boundaries The neighborhood is bordered on the west by Sheridan Boulevard, which is also the border with Jefferson County and the town of Lakewood, on the north by 17th and 19th avenues, on the east by Federal Boulevard, and on the south by Lakewood Gulch. Landmarks The neighborhood takes its name from West Colfax Avenue, which is the busiest street in the neighborhood and which runs east and west through it.
