''Bligh Had a Daughter'' is a 1948 Australia radio play by Rex Rienits about Mary Bligh, daughter of William Bligh, who was living with her father at the time of the Rum Rebellion. It was one of the most highly regarded Australian radio plays of the 1940s The play was repeated later in 1948 and in 1949. and produced again by the ABC in 1954 (in Brisbane, directed by Raymond Menmuir). Rienits used elements of the play in his 1960 mini series ''Stormy Petrel'', based on his radio serial of the same name. In that the role of Mary Bligh was played by Delia Williams. Premise According to the ABC Weekly "Bligh, when appointed Governor of New South Wales 17 years after the 'Bounty' affair, had a wife and six daughters, but only Mary, his second daughter, accompanied him to his new place of appointment. Patricia Carmel Stewart Kennedy (17 March 1916 – 10 December 2012) was an Australian actress with a long career in theatre, radio, film and television. According to one writer she was "sometimes called the first lady of Melbourne radio and theatre." Early life Kennedy was born in Queenscliff, Victoria on 17 March (St. Patrick's Day), 1916. (Many sources give her year of birth as 1917). She was raised, and remained, a practising Catholic. She trained as a school teacher before winning the Colac Amateur Festival around 1938, which sparked a passion for acting. She started her stage career in 1943. Major George Johnston
Lieutenant-Colonel George Johnston (19 March 1764 – 5 January 1823) was a Royal Marines officer and colonial administrator who served as the Lieutenant-Governor of New South Wales from 1794 to 1795 and again from 1806 to 1808. After serving in the American War of Independence, he served in the East Indies theatre of the French Revolutionary Wars before volunteering to accompany the First Fleet which established the colony of New South Wales in 1788. In New South Wales, Johnston served as an adjutant to Governor Arthur Phillip before joining the New South Wales Corps, and played a key role in suppressing the Castle Hill convict rebellion in 1804. He led his troops in deposing Governor William Bligh in the Rum Rebellion in 1808, which led to Johnston to being court-martialled and cashiered from the military. Elizabeth Macarthur (14 August 1766 – 9 February 1850) was an English-born landowner and businesswomen who was wife of John Macarthur. Early life Elizabeth Macarthur was born in Bridgerule England, the daughter of provincial farmers, Richard and Grace Veale of Cornish origin. Her father died when she was aged four years. Her mother remarried when she was 11, leaving Elizabeth in the care of her grandfather, John, and friend. Elizabeth married Plymouth soldier John Macarthur in 1788.
