Blera Fallax
''Blera fallax'' or the pine hoverfly is a rare species of hoverfly normally associated with mature pine tree in Northern and Central Europe. Biology The pine hoverfly larva, which are of the rat-tailed maggot type, normally develop in damp rot holes of felled or fallen pine trees, notably the Scots pine (''Pinus sylvestris''), though it will occur with other conifers. Preference is for large stumps where there has been some heartwood softening by the fungus ''Phaeolus schweinitzii''. Adult flies have been seen feeding on wild raspberry flowers, but little else is known about adult behaviour. Conservation In Scotland, attempts have been made on RSPB The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) is a charitable organisation registered in England and Wales and in Scotland. It was founded in 1889. It works to promote conservation and protection of birds and the wider environment throu ... sites to create artificial rot holes in felled pine stumps. This has led to a ...

Blera Humeralis
''Blera humeralis'', the yellow-legged wood fly, is an uncommon species of syrphid fly officially described by Samuel Wendell Williston in 1882. Hoverflies are so-named for the ability to remain nearly motionless while in flight. The adults are known as flower flies, as they are commonly found around and on flowers from which they get energy-giving nectar and protein-rich pollen. The larvae are of the rat-tailed type, feeding on exuding sap or in the rot holes of trees. Distribution This Nearctic species is distributed along the coast in Western North America. Description Head Thorax The thorax is shining black, clothed with orange-yellowish pile and with four more or less distinct cupreous stripes (''vittae''). The postpronotum (''humeri'') is opaque yellow. The scutellum is shining black, with a yellow margin. A large yellow spot is noted on the mesopleural from the transverse suture to the middle legs. Charles Howard Curran
Charles Howard Curran (20 March 1894 – 23 January 1972) was a Canadian entomologist who specialised in Diptera. Curran's main taxonomic interests were in brachyceran flies, particularly the flower flies Syrphidae, in which he described 723 species. From 1922 to 1928 he worked as a specialist service in Diptera Entomology of Canada. In 1928, he was hired by the American Museum of Natural History as Assistant Curator and, from 1947 until his retirement in 1960, as Curator of Insects and Spiders. In 1931, he donated his collection to that institution: it has 10,000 specimens representing about 1,700 species including 400 types. He received in 1933 a Doctorate of Science at the University of Montreal with a thesis entitled The Families and Genera of North American Diptera. He was vice-president of the New York Entomological Society The New York Entomological Society was founded in 1892. The Brooklyn Entomological Society merged with the Society in 1968. Blera Flukei
''Blera flukei'', the red-cheeked wood fly, is a rare species of syrphid fly first officially described by Curran, 1953 as ''Cynorhina flukei''. Hoverflies get their names from the ability to remain nearly motionless while in flight. The adults are also known as flower flies for they are commonly found around and on flowers, from which they get both energy-giving nectar and protein-rich pollen. The larvae are of the rat-tailed type, feeding on exuding sap or in the rot holes of trees. Distribution This is a nearctic species that is distributed across the Northern United States and Southern Canada from Alaska to Oregon and into IdahoExternal map Description For terms see Morphology of Diptera Dipteran morphology differs in some significant ways from the broader morphology of insects.
