Blanche Jenkins
Blanche Jenkins (active 1872–1915) was a British portrait painter. Life Jenkins was active as an exhibitor at the Society of British Artists and at the Royal Academy, where she showed some 49 works from 1872 onwards. She was also a member of the Society of Lady Artists. She exhibited her work at the Woman's Building at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. Her painting ''Her Morning Ride'' was included in the 1905 book ''Women Painters of the World''. Society Of British Artists
The Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) is a British art body established in 1823 as the Society of British Artists, as an alternative to the Royal Academy. History The RBA commenced with twenty-seven members, and took until 1876 to reach fifty. Artists wishing to resign were required to give three months' notice and pay a fine of £100. The RBA's first two exhibitions were held in 1824, with one or two exhibitions held annually thereafter. The RBA currently has 115 elected members who participate in an annual exhibition currently held at the Mall Galleries in London. The Society's previous gallery was a building designed by John Nash in Suffolk Street. Queen Victoria granted the Society the Royal Charter in 1887. The Society of Women Artists (SWA) is a British art body dedicated to celebrating and promoting fine art created by women. It was founded as the Society of Female Artists (SFA) in about 1855, offering women artists the opportunity to exhibit and sell their works. Annual exhibitions have been held in London since 1857, with some wartime interruptions. Women artists competing for awards at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition submitted their work to juries at appropriate buildings. Women artists were represented in the Palace of Fine Arts, along with their fellow countrymen. Women exhibited painting and sculpture throughout the Fair. The Woman's Building did not have a juried exhibition, but lobbied to have artists of the day submit their work for the "Court of Honor". The Woman's Building (Chicago)
The Woman's Building was designed and built for the World's Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893 under the auspices of the Board of Lady Managers. Of the twelve main buildings for the Exhibition, on June 30, 1892 The Woman's Building was the first to be completed. It had exhibition space as well as an assembly room, a library, and a Hall of Honor. The ''History of the World's Fair'' states, "It will be a long time before such an aggregation of woman's work, as may now be seen in the Woman's Building, can be gathered from all parts of the world again." Building Fourteen women architects submitted designs for the Woman's Building. The Board of Architects selected Sophia Hayden's design. The design was for a three story building done in Italian Renaissance style with Corinthian columns.
