Blackfellas
''Blackfellas'' is a 1993 Australian drama film directed by James Ricketson and starring John Moore, David Ngoombujarra, Jack Charles, John Hargreaves and Ernie Dingo. It is an adaptation of Archie Weller's 1981 novel ''The Day of the Dog''. The film won two AFI Awards and had its premiere at the Valhalla Cinema in Melbourne on 26 August 1993. Plot In Perth, Western Australia, Doug Dooligan (John Moore), a young Nyoongar man, is released from prison, where he was incarcerated for assault. Outside, he is picked up by his charismatic childhood friend Floyd "Pretty Boy" Davies (David Ngoombujarra), who was partially responsible for Doug's incarceration, and taken to a remote Aboriginal community in Western Australia. James Ricketson
James Staniforth Ricketson is an Australian film director, known for the feature film '' Blackfellas''. He became more widely known when he was charged with espionage for flying a drone in Cambodia in 2017. Ernest Ashley Dingo Member of the Order of Australia, AM (born 31 July 1956) is an Indigenous Australians, Indigenous Australian actor, television presenter and comedian, originating from the Yamatji people of the Murchison (Western Australia), Murchison region of Western Australia. He is a designated Australian National Living Treasure. Archie Weller
Archie Weller (born 1957) is an Australian writer of novels, short stories and screen plays. Early life and education Archie Weller was born in 1957 in Subiaco, Western Australia, and grew up on a farm, Wonnenup, near Cranbrook in the Great Southern region of the state. He has claimed to be of partial Aboriginal heritage, though this has been disputed. He attended Guildford Grammar School in Perth as a boarder. His mother was a journalist and his father was a farmer. As a young child Weller was encouraged by his grandfather to write. Writing Weller's first book, ''The Day of the Dog'', was written, in his own words, "within a period of six weeks in a spirit of anger after his release from Broome jail for what he regarded as a wrongful conviction". Early life Kelton Pell is a Noongar man from Western Australia. Career Pell has performed on stage since 1985, performing for Yirra Yaakin Theatre, the Black Swan Theatre Company, and the Sydney Theatre Company. David Ngoombujarra
David Ngoombujarra (27 June 1967 – 17 July 2011) was an Indigenous Australian actor of the Yamatji people. Born David Bernard Starr in Meekatharra, Western Australia, his acting career spanned over two decades from the late 1980s to 2010; he won three Australian Film Institute Awards. On 17 July 2011 he was found in a park in Fremantle, and taken to Fremantle Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Personal life Ngoombujarra was adopted by Amy and Derek Sloan, and met his birth mother when he was 14. He moved to Sydney with plans for stardom and picked up some minor film roles in '' Young Einstein'' and others after being spotted busking in Circular Quay. His wide smile and booming laugh were very marketable. Ngoombujarra fell into petty crime and battled alcohol addiction which may have contributed to his death.
