Blackfellas
''Blackfellas'' is a 1993 Australian drama film directed by James Ricketson and starring John Moore, David Ngoombujarra, Jack Charles, John Hargreaves and Ernie Dingo. It is an adaptation of Archie Weller's 1981 novel ''The Day of the Dog''. The film won two AFI Awards and had its premiere at the Valhalla Cinema in Melbourne on 26 August 1993. Plot In Perth, Western Australia, Doug Dooligan (John Moore), a young Nyoongar man, is released from prison, where he was incarcerated for assault. Outside, he is picked up by his charismatic childhood friend Floyd "Pretty Boy" Davies (David Ngoombujarra), who was partially responsible for Doug's incarceration, and taken to a remote Aboriginal community in Western Australia. James Ricketson
James Staniforth Ricketson is an Australian film director, known for the feature film ''Blackfellas''. He became more widely known when he was charged with espionage for flying a drone in Cambodia in 2017. Archie Weller
Archie Weller (born 13 July 1957) is an Australian writer of novels, short stories and screen plays. Early life Archie Weller was born in Subiaco, Western Australia, and grew up on a farm, ''Wonnenup'', near Cranbrook in the Great Southern region of the state. He attended Guildford Grammar School in Perth as a boarder. His mother was a journalist and his father was a farmer. As a young child Weller was encouraged by his grandfather to write. Writing Weller states he wrote his first book, ''The Day of the Dog'', "within a period of six weeks in a spirit of anger after his release from Broome jail for what he regarded as a wrongful conviction". The AACTA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay is an award presented by the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA), for an Australian screenplay "based on material previously released or published". Kelton Pell is an Aboriginal Australian (Noongar) stage, TV and film actor, best known for his role as the court liaison officer, Sam Wallan, in the SBS legal drama '' The Circuit'' set in north-western Australia. Pell is from Western Australia. Career Pell has been a stage presence in the theatre since 1985, performing for the Yirra Yaakin Noongar Theatre, the Black Swan Theatre Company and the Sydney Theatre Company. Jack Charles (actor)
Jack Charles (5 September 1943 – 13 September 2022), also known as Uncle Jack Charles, was an Australian stage and screen actor and activist, known for his advocacy for Aboriginal people. He was involved in establishing the first Indigenous theatre in Australia, co-founding Nindethana Theatre with Bob Maza in Melbourne in 1971. His film credits include the Australian film '' The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith'' (1978), among others, and more recently appeared in TV series '' Cleverman'' (2016) and '' Preppers'' (2021). He spent many decades in and out of prison and as a heroin addict, which he ascribed largely to trauma that he experienced as a child, as one of the Stolen Generations.
