Black Goddess
''Black Goddess'' () is a 1978 Nigerian-Brazilian film written and directed by Ola Balogun. It stars a largely Brazilian cast that include Sonya Santos, Zózimo Bulbul, Léa Garcia, and Jorge Coutinho. The film is set in both the eighteenth century and the 1970s. Plot The protagonist of the movie is Babatunde, played by Zozimo Bulbul. The dying wish of Babatunde's father was for Babatunde to make a journey to Brazil and see what has become of the descendants of his great-grandfather, Oluyole who was abducted and sold into slavery and also search for the story of a mysterious legend in the family's history. He is handed a Yemoja sculpture as guide for the journey that took him from Lagos to favelas in Brazil and a visit to a candomblé session. The movie's plot used African spiritual embodiment existing as a reality. Babatunde is transported back to the period of his grandfather's time in Brazil with the help of Yemoja. Ola Balogun
Ola Balogun (born 1 August 1945) is a Nigerian filmmaker and scriptwriter. He also ventured into the Nigerian music industry in 2001. Balogun, who has been making films for more than three decades, is part of the first generation of Nigerian filmmakers. Balogun studied cinematography at Institut des hautes études cinématographiques. Years after his graduation, he wrote his doctorate thesis on documentary films. On returning to Nigeria in 1968, he joined the staff of the Nigerian Film Unit, which was under the administration of the Ministry of Information, and later worked at the National Museum and Obafemi Awolowo University. Zózimo Bulbul
Zózimo Bulbul (September 21, 1937 – January 24, 2013) was a Brazilian actor, filmmaker, and activist. Bulbul was a prominent proponent of Afro-Brazilian culture within Brazilian cinema and society at-large. Bulbul co-founded and organized the Encontro de Cinema Negro Brasil, África & Américas, which showcases films featuring African and Afro-Brazilian actors, directors, and themes. Bulbul made his film debut in the 1962 Brazilian motion picture, '' Cinco Vezes Favela''. He went on to star in more than thirty films throughout his career, including ''Quilombo'' and '' Sagarana: The Duel''. Bulbul was also a filmmaker and film director. His best known work was his '' Abolição'', which he released in 1988. Through ''Abolição'', Bulbul explored the 100th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Brazil. Léa Garcia
Léa Lucas Garcia de Aguiar (11 March 1933 – 15 August 2023) was a Brazilian actress. She was known for her numerous television and film roles. Her breakout role was in the 1959 Oscar-winning '' Black Orpheus'', in which she portrayed Serafina, Eurydice's cousin. Garcia died of heart complications on 15 August 2023, at the age of 90. Remi Kabaka (born 27 March 1945) is a Nigerian Afro-rock avant-garde drummer. He worked with John Martyn, Hugh Masekela, on '' Rhythm of the Saints'' by Paul Simon, and '' Short Cut Draw Blood'' by Jim Capaldi. Candomblé () is an African diaspora religions, African diasporic religion that developed in Brazil during the 19th century. Janet R. Maslin (born August 12, 1949) is an American journalist, who served as a film critic for ''The New York Times'' from 1977 to 1999, serving as chief critic for the last six years, and then a literary critic from 2000 to 2015. Carthage Film Festival (Journées cinématographiques de Carthage, or JCC) is an annual film festival that takes place in Tunis, founded in 1966. It is also known by its Arabic title, ("Cinema Days of Carthage"). Initially biennial alternating with the Carthage Theatre Festival, the festival became an annual event in 2014.
