Bjorne Island
Bjorne Island, , meaning 'Bear Island', is an island in NE Greenland. Administratively it belongs to the Northeast Greenland National Park. It is the only island in the inner Kaiser Franz Joseph Fjord system. History This island was first mapped and named ''Björnön'' by Alfred Gabriel Nathorst in 1899 during the Swedish Greenland Expedition in search of survivors of S. A. Geologfjord
Geologfjord is a fjord in King Christian X Land, East Greenland. Administratively it belongs to the Northeast Greenland National Park. History The fjord was named in 1899 by Swedish Arctic explorer and geologist A.G. Nathorst during the expedition he led to Greenland in search of survivors of S. A. Andrée's Arctic balloon expedition of 1897. The name was chosen owing to the spectacularly colored strata and rock formations in the shores of the fjord. Kaiser Franz Joseph Fjord
Kaiser Franz Joseph Fjord (; ) is the northernmost fjord system in the NE Greenland National Park area, East Greenland. Geography The Kaiser Franz Joseph Fjord has its mouth in the Foster Bay of the Greenland Sea, between Cape Mackenzie at the eastern end of Geographical Society Island and Cape Franklin, the southern end of the mainland's Gauss Peninsula; Bontekoe Island lies in the bay off its mouth. It extends westwards for about 100 km, then at Eleonore Bay in an NNE/SSW direction for about 32 km, bending again westwards at Cape Mohn, the western end of Ymer Island, branching again with the Isfjord extending northwestwards for over 60 km. Northeast Greenland National Park
Northeast Greenland National Park (, ) is the world's largest national park and the 10th largest protected area (the only larger protected areas consist mostly of sea). Established in 1974, the Northeast Greenland national park expanded to its present size in 1988. It protects of the interior and northeastern coast of Greenland and is larger than the area of Tanzania, but smaller than that of Egypt. This means that the national park is bigger than 166 of the world's 195 countries. It was the first national park to be created in the Kingdom of Denmark and remains Greenland's only national park. Alfred Gabriel Nathorst
Alfred Gabriel Nathorst (7 November 1850 – 20 January 1921) was a Swedish Arctic explorer, geologist, and palaeobotanist. He travelled to Spitzbergen, Svalbard and Greenland where he took an interest in the Arctic floras from the Paleozoic and Mesozoic periods. Life Nathorst was born in Väderbrunn in Sweden to Hjalmar Otto and Maria Charlotta born Georgii, who had moved to Alnarp where Hjalmar served as a professor at the institute of agriculture. Nathorst studied at Malmö before joining the University of Lund in 1868. He spent some time in the University of Uppsala and returned to Lund for his doctorate in 1874. His interest in botany were influenced by Nils Peter Angelin, N. P. Angelin. Nathorst's interest in geology was awakened by Charles Lyell's ''Principles of Geology'' and, at the age of 21, Nathorst visited Lyell in England in 1872. Andrée Land (Greenland)
Andrée Land is a peninsula in King Christian X Land, East Greenland that is bounded by Kejser Franz Joseph Fjord, ''Isfjord'' and ''Geologfjord''. History The peninsula was named by A.G. Nathorst on his 1899 expedition after Swedish Arctic explorer Salomon August Andrée, who had made an attempt to reach the North Pole by balloon in 1897. One of the aims of Nathorst's 1899 venture was to search for traces of the lost Andrée's Arctic Balloon Expedition, whose fate was unknown until 1930, when it became known that Andrée had crash-landed on the pack ice and died on Kvitøya. Google Earth is a web mapping, web and computer program created by Google that renders a 3D computer graphics, 3D representation of Earth based primarily on satellite imagery.
