Bishop Of Guyana
The Anglican Diocese of Guyana is one of eight within the Province of the West Indies. Its cathedral is St. George's Cathedral, Georgetown. The diocese came into being on 24 August 1842, when William Austin (1842–1892) was consecrated as the first bishop. Bishops who have served the diocese since then have included: Proctor Swaby (1893–1899), Edward Parry (1900–1921), Oswald Parry (1921–1937), Alan Knight (1937–1979), Randolph George (1980–2009) Cornell Moss (2009–2015), and Charles Davidson (2016–2021). The current bishop is Alfred David (2021-Present). In 1842 (shortly after division), her jurisdiction was described as " Demerara, Essequibo, Berbice". British Guiana
British Guiana was a British colony, part of the mainland British West Indies. It was located on the northern coast of South America. Since 1966 it has been known as the independent nation of Guyana. The first known Europeans to encounter Guiana were Sir Walter Raleigh, an English explorer, and his crew. Raleigh published a book entitled ''The Discovery of Guiana'', but this mainly relates to the Guayana natural region, Guayana region of Venezuela. The Dutch Empire, Dutch were the first Europeans to settle there, starting in the early 17th century. They founded the colonies of Essequibo (colony), Essequibo and Berbice, adding Demerara in the mid-18th century. United Society Partners in the Gospel (USPG) is a United Kingdom-based charitable organisation (registered charity no. 234518). It was first incorporated under Royal Charter in 1701 as the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (SPG) as a high church missionary organisation of the Church of England and was active in the Thirteen Colonies of North America. The group was renamed in 1965 as the United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (USPG) after incorporating the activities of the Universities' Mission to Central Africa (UMCA). Charles Davidson (bishop)
Charles Davidson has been the Bishop of Guyana since 2016. Davidson was born in Mackenzie, Linden, and educated at Mackenzie High School, Government Technical Institute in Electrical Craft Practice, Codrington College, Barbados, and University of the West Indies, Cave Hill. He was ordained a deacon in 1977 and a priest in 1978. He did post-grad work at Princeton Theological Seminary, General Theological Seminary and University of the South, Sewanee.
