''Birangona'' () is the title awarded by the Government of Bangladesh to women Rape during the Bangladesh Liberation War, raped during the Bangladesh Liberation War by the Pakistan Army, Pakistan army, Razakar (Pakistan), Razakar paramilitaries, and their local collaborators. History On 16 December 1971, Bangladesh won its independence from Pakistan through the Bangladesh Liberation War. Leesa Gazi (; born 14 August 1969) is a Bangladeshi-born British writer, playwright, theatre director and actress based in London. Background Gazi's father fought during the Bangladesh Liberation War. Career Gazi is the co-founder of theatre and arts company, Komola Collective. She was the script-writer and performer of ''Six Seasons'' and Tahmima Anam's '' A Golden Age'' at the Southbank Centre. Nilima Ibrahim
Neelima Ibrahim (11 October 1921 – 18 June 2002) was a Bangladeshi educationist, littérateur and social worker. She is well known for her scholarship on Bengali literature but even more so for her depiction of raped and tortured women in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War in her book ''Ami Birangana Bolchi''. She was awarded Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1969, Begum Rokeya Padak in 1996 and Ekushey Padak in 2000 by the Government of Bangladesh for her contributions to Bangla literature. Early life and education Neelima was born on 11 October 1921 in Bagerhat, Khulna to Zamindar Prafulla Roy Chowdhury and Kusum Kumari Devi. Rape During The Bangladesh Liberation War
During the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, members of the Pakistani military and Razakar paramilitary force raped between 200,000 and 400,000 Bengali women and girls in a systematic campaign of genocidal rape. Some of these women died in captivity or committed suicide, while others moved from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) to India. Both Bengali Muslim and Bengali Hindu women were targeted for rape. West Pakistani men wanted to cleanse a nation corrupted by the presence of Hindus and believed that the sacrifice of Hindu women was needed; Bengali women were thus viewed as Hindu or Hindu-like. These rapes apparently caused thousands of pregnancies, births of war babies, abortions, infanticide, suicide, and ostracism of the victims. Maleka Khan (; born ) is a Bangladeshi social worker and activist for the rights of the '' Birangana'', women raped during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971.
