''Bionic'' is the debut album of the 1990s Canadian rock band Sandbox. The album was recorded at Metalworks Studios between January and February 1995. It was released in 1995 on Latitude Records, a short-lived independent label from St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador founded by local music promoter Frederick Brokenshire and run out of his Fred's Records music store. An enhanced edition was later released in 1996. Singles The album's first single, "Curious", reached #34 on Canada's ''RPM'' Singles chart and #8 on Canada's Alternative chart. Sandbox (band)
Sandbox was a Canadian alternative rock band active in the 1990s. The band consisted of Paul Murray on lead vocals, Mike Smith and Jason Archibald on guitar, Scott MacFarlane on bass and Troy Shanks on drums. Formation Sandbox was formed by Mike Smith in New Glasgow in 1992, originally as a cover band named Sandbox Legacy. Lead singer Paul Murray is the nephew of singer Anne Murray. The band debuted with the 1993 indie EP, ''Maskman''. Canadian chart success Their debut album ''Bionic'' was released in 1995. The album spawned their most well known singles, "Curious" and "Collide". "Curious" reached No. 34 on Canada's ''RPM'' Singles chart and No. 8 on Canada's Alternative chart, while "Collide" peaked at #57 in the ''RPM100''. Both songs received regular airplay on MuchMusic. Alternative rock (also known as alternative music, alt-rock or simply alternative) is a category of rock music that evolved from the independent music underground of the 1970s. Metalworks Studios is a music recording studio in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. It was established in 1978 by Gil Moore of the Canadian rock group, Triumph (band), Triumph. Since 1978, Metalworks Studios has expanded into a six studio facility offering in-house tracking, mixing and mastering, as well as video editing and DVD authoring. The publication was founded by Walt Grealis in February 1964, supported through its existence by record label owner Stan Klees. ''RPM'' ceased publication in November 2000. RPM charts On June 11, 1995, Canadian music magazine '' RPM'' began publishing a weekly alternative rock music chart under the name ''Alternative 30''. Much is a Canadian English language discretionary specialty channel owned by BCE Inc. through its Bell Media subsidiary that airs programming aimed at teenagers and young adults. It is headquartered at 299 Queen Street West in what was once called the MuchMusic World Headquarters. This channel was originally launched on August 31, 1984 as MuchMusic, under the ownership of CHUM Limited, the owner of Citytv Toronto, though "Much" has been the branding most commonly seen on-air since 1997. In 2006, Bell Globemedia acquired MuchMusic and its parent CHUM Limited, but regulatory limits in media ownership forced CHUM to sell off the Citytv stations to avoid conflicts with CTV stations in the same markets. The CASBY Awards were a Canadian awards ceremony for independent and alternative music, presented annually by Toronto, Ontario radio station CFNY, currently branded as 102.1 The Edge. CASBY is an acronym for Canadian Artists Selected By You. The awards were first presented in 1981 under the name U-Knows, a pun on Canada's mainstream Juno Awards. The concept was developed by David Marsden, the program director at CFNY at the time, when he heard the Juno nominations announced on CBC Radio, and included was Long John Baldry — who was newly resident in Canada but had already been in the music business for almost 20 years — as most promising vocalist. Mike Smith (actor)
Mike Smith is a Canadian actor, screenwriter, comedian and musician. He is best known for his portrayal of Bubbles and co-writer of the cult classic television program, films and stage production ''Trailer Park Boys''. He was also the guitarist for the Canadian rock band Sandbox. Smith earned a degree in English from St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Musical interest Smith showed early signs of musical talent, after learning to play the guitar at age six.
