Billy Mitchell (video Game Player)
William James Mitchell Jr. (born July 16, 1965) is an American video game player. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he was recognized for numerous records on classic video games before disputes arose over their legitimacy beginning in 2018. Mitchell has also appeared in several documentaries on competitive gaming and retrogaming. In 1982, Mitchell was featured in photo spread in ''Life'' along with other video game champions during the height of the golden age of arcade video games. In 1999, Mitchell has said he was the first person to attain a perfect score of 3,333,360 points on the arcade game ''Pac-Man''. A 2007 documentary, '' The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters'', follows his attempts to maintain the highest score on ''Donkey Kong'' after being challenged by newcomer Steve Wiebe. History In mid-1981, Walter Day, founder of Twin Galaxies, Inc., visited more than 100 video game arcades over four months, recording the high scores that he found on each game. On November 10, 1981, Day opened his arcade in Ottumwa, Iowa, naming it Twin Galaxies. On February 9, 1982, Day's database of records was released publicly as the Twin Galaxies National Scoreboard. Twin Galaxies' first event formed state teams from the top players in North Carolina and California, facing them off in a "California Challenges North Carolina All-Star Playoff." The video game crash of 1983 (known in Japan as the Atari shock) was a large-scale recession in the video game industry that occurred from 1983 to 1985 in the United States. The crash was attributed to several factors, including market saturation in the number of video game consoles and available games, many of which were of poor quality. Waning interest in console games in favor of personal computers also played a role. Home video game revenue peaked at around $3.2 billion in 1983, then fell to around $100 million by 1985 (a drop of almost 97%). The U.S. National Video Game Team (USNVGT) was an American esports team in the early 1980s. It was founded in July 1983 in Ottumwa, Iowa, United States by Walter Day and Jim Riley as part of the Electronic Circus tour, with Steve Sanders as the first captain. After the Circus folded, Day re-established the team with himself as the captain, taking the team on a bus tour. The team challenged the players of arcades across the country and attempted to challenge other countries through visits to foreign embassies. Ottumwa ( ) is a List of cities in Iowa, city in and the county seat of Wapello County, Iowa, United States. The population was 25,529 at the time of the 2020 United States census, 2020 U.S. Census. Walter Aldro Day Jr. (born May 14, 1949) is an American businessman and the founder of Twin Galaxies, an organization that tracks world records for video games and conducts a program of electronic-gaming promotions. Biography Walter Aldro Day Jr. was born in Oakland, California, on May 14, 1949. After moving to the town of Fairfield, Iowa, Day sold commemorative newspapers for a living. In 1980, Day went to Houston, Texas to become an oil futures trader. He soon moved back to Fairfield and became a landlord, purchasing the Twin Galaxies arcade in Ottumwa, Iowa in 1981. That same year, he appeared on the cover of ''Time'' in an edition featuring video games, and he established an online platform to establish rules and compile records for competitive video game playing.
