Billy Joe MacLean
William Joseph MacLean (November 24, 1936 – April 23, 2025) was a Canadian politician. He represented the electoral district of Inverness South in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1981 to 1988. He represented the Nova Scotia Progressive Conservative Party until he was expelled as an MLA on October 30, 1986, and was elected as an independent on February 24, 1987. MacLean was born in Antigonish, Nova Scotia on November 24, 1936. One of his brothers, Norman J. MacLean, also served in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly for Inverness County from 1963 to 1973. He attended St. Francis Xavier University and was a businessman. From 1968 to 1973, (having been on town council since 1962) he served as deputy mayor of Port Hawkesbury, and from 1973 to 1981 as mayor. He was married to Glenda Auld. In 1994, MacLean was elected once again to serve as mayor of Port Hawkesbury and was later reelected. In November 2015, MacLean announced that he would not seek re-election in 2016. MacLean ... Antigonish ( ; ) is a town in Antigonish County, Nova Scotia, Canada. The town is home to St. Francis Xavier University and the oldest continuous Highland games outside Scotland. It is approximately 160 kilometres (100 miles) northeast of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Halifax, the provincial capital. History Antigonish had been the location of an annual Mi'kmaq summer coastal community prior to European settlement. The original definition of the name has been lost as the Mi'kmaq language has undergone many revisions over the last two centuries. The first European settlement took place in 1784 when Lt. The Executive Council of Nova Scotia (informally and more commonly, the Cabinet of Nova Scotia) is the cabinet of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. Almost always made up of members of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly, the cabinet is similar in structure and role to the federal Canadian cabinet, though smaller in size with different portfolios. Group A streptococcal infections are a number of infections with ''Streptococcus pyogenes'', a group A streptococcus (GAS). ''S. pyogenes'' is a species of beta-hemolytic Gram-positive bacteria that is responsible for a wide range of infections that are mostly common and fairly mild. If the bacteria enters the bloodstream, the infection can become severe and life-threatening, and is called an invasive GAS (iGAS). Infection of GAS may spread through direct contact with mucus or sores on the skin. GAS infections can cause over 500,000 deaths per year. Despite the emergence of antibiotics as a treatment for group A streptococcus, cases of iGAS are an increasing problem, particularly on the continent of Africa. John Buchanan (Canadian Politician)
John MacLennan Buchanan (April 22, 1931 – October 3, 2019) was a Canadian lawyer and former politician who served as the 20th premier of Nova Scotia from 1978 to 1990 and as a member of the Senate of Canada from 1990 to 2006. Early life Buchanan was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, the son of Flora Isabel Campbell and Murdoch William Buchanan. He graduated from Mount Allison University in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science degree and a Certificate in Engineering. He then went on to study at Dalhousie Law School and after graduating in 1958 entered the practice of law where he was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1972 and awarded Doctorates from Nova Scotia Technical College, Mount Allison University, Saint Mary's University, St. Francis Xavier University, and Université Saint Anne.
