Billy Cairns
William Hart Cairns (7 October 1914 – 25 May 1988) was an English footballer who played as a centre forward. Cairns started his career with non-league Stargate Rovers before signing for Newcastle United in 1934. He scored a total of 53 goals in 90 league and cup appearances for Newcastle before the outbreak of World War II. Cairns signed for Gateshead in 1944, appearing in the 1945–46 FA Cup. 1946–47 Football League
The 1946–47 season was the 48th completed season of The Football League. This season was the first to feature a full football programme since the 1938–39 campaign. Division placings were the same as in the unfinished 1939–40 Football League. Final division tables Beginning with the season 1894–95, clubs finishing level on points were separated according to goal average (goals scored divided by goals conceded), or more properly put, goal ratio. In case one or more teams had the same goal difference, this system favoured those teams who had scored fewer goals. The goal average system was eventually scrapped beginning with the 1976–77 season. The Football League
The English Football League (EFL) is a league of professional football clubs from England and Wales. Founded in 1888 as the Football League, it is the oldest football league in the world, and was the top-level football league in England from its foundation until 1992, when the top 22 clubs split from it to form the Premier League. The 1945–46 FA Cup was the 65th season of the world's oldest football cup competition, the Football Association Challenge Cup, generally known as the FA Cup, and the first to be held after the Second World War. Derby County were the winners, beating Charlton Athletic 4–1 after extra time in the final at Wembley, London. The tournament witnessed a disaster in the sixth round when, during the second leg of the Bolton–Stoke City tie, 33 people were crushed to death in the Burnden Park disaster.
