Billy Burke (golfer)
William John Burke, Burkauskas (polonized Burkowski) (December 14, 1902 – April 19, 1972) was an American professional golfer during the early 20th century. Early life Burke was born in Naugatuck, Connecticut. He was of Lithuanian descent. Professional career His greatest season was 1931, when he won the U.S. Open, reached the semi-finals of the PGA Championship, and won four events on the professional circuit, plus appeared on the Ryder Cup team where he was undefeated in two matches. He was also selected for the 1933 Ryder Cup team but not before some agitation by Gene Sarazen was done on his behalf. Burke won his only match in the 1933 competition. Burke's 1931 U.S. Open win came in a marathon playoff. He and George Von Elm were tied at 292 (8-over-par) after regulation play. William Burke (1912 – 23 January 1995) was an Irish hurler who played as a centre-back for the Kilkenny senior team. Burke made his first appearance for the team during the 1934 championship and became a regular player over the next decade. William "Billy the Kid" Burke was a gangster in the 19th century. Burke was born to an Irish-American family in Massachusetts on March 18, 1858. By 1880 his mother had been widowed and the family had moved to Chicago and Burke had become a professional criminal. His brother, John “Fat Man” Burke, claimed he was a plumber but he also worked as a professional criminal. Two of Burke's younger brothers held positions in the telegraph office. William M. Burke (born 1943) is an American photographer and educator known for his 20 years of documentary photography in Vietnam and neighboring countries, detailing the effects of war. Biography William M. Burke was born in 1943 in Derby, Connecticut. In 1966, he received a B.A. degree in Art History from Middlebury College. He continued studies at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), and received a B.F.A degree in 1968 and a MFA degree in 1970, while studying with photographer Harry Callahan. In 1971, he started teaching at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. In 1978, he became a Guggenheim fellow in photography. William Francis Burke Jr. (March 9, 1955 September 11, 2001) was a Fire Captain with the Fire Department of New York, who was killed in the September 11 attacks. Burke died when he chose to stay with stranded civilians in the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Burke was the only member of Engine 21 who died in the attacks.
