Billy Brewer (other)
Homer Ervin "Billy" Brewer (October 8, 1934 – May 12, 2018) was an American college football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at Southeastern Louisiana University from 1974 to 1979, Louisiana Tech University from 1980 to 1982, and University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) from 1983 to 1993, compiling a career college football coaching record of 125–94–6. He was also the host of an Ole Miss Rebel football post-game call-in show. Playing career A native of Columbus, Mississippi, Brewer first came to Ole Miss as a player for the Rebel teams of Johnny Vaught. He played quarterback, defensive back, punted, and held for placekickers from 1957 to 1960. Ole Miss named him to its "Team of the Century" in 1993. Brewer was selected by the Washington Redskins in the 20th round of the 1959 NFL draft. He played in 11 games, starting six, for the Redskins during the 1960 season. 1960 American Football League Draft
The 1960 American Football League draft was held on November 22–23, 1959, in Minneapolis, shortly after the organization of the league, and lasted 33 rounds. An additional draft of 20 rounds was held by the AFL on December 2. Teams were required to fill the 11 squad positions by selecting four backs, two ends, two tackles, two guards, and a center with their first 11 picks. Before each position was selected, teams drew lots to determine the selection order. Though professional teams used dedicated offensive and defensive units, the league did not want to go 22 rounds before starting unrestricted drafting. The 1970 Sugar Bowl was the 36th edition of the college football bowl game, played at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Thursday, January 1. It featured the third-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks of the Southwest Conference (SWC) and the #13 Ole Miss Rebels of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Ole Miss upset Arkansas, 27–22. The Big Ten Conference co-champion Michigan Wolverines defeated the Ole Miss Rebels of the Southeastern Conference (SEC), 35–3. Shreveport ( ) is a city in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The 1983 Independence Bowl was a college football postseason bowl game between the Ole Miss Rebels and the Air Force Falcons. Background The Rebels tied for 3rd in the Southeastern Conference, in their first bowl appearance since 1971. The Falcons had finished 2nd in the Western Athletic Conference, but they were making their 2nd straight bowl game, the first time they had made consecutive bowl games in school history. This was the first Independence Bowl for either team. Game summary In a rain drenched game, the Falcons led 6-0 on two field goals by Sean Pavlich from 44 and 39 yards out. Ole Miss halved the lead on 39 yarder from Neil Teevan in the 3rd, but Pavlich's 27 yarder in the same quarter proved to be the last score of the game. Marty Louthan went 6-of-7 for 71 yards, and Mike Brown ran for 91 yards on 12 carries for the Falcons.
