William John Bennett (born July 31, 1943) is an American conservative politician and political commentator who served as the third United States secretary of education from 1985 to 1988 under President Ronald Reagan. He also held the post of director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy under George H. W. Bush. Early life and education Bennett was born July 31, 1943, to a Catholic family in Brooklyn, the son of Nancy (''née'' Walsh), a medical secretary, and F. Robert Bennett, a banker. His family moved to Washington, D.C., where he attended Gonzaga College High School. He graduated from Williams College in 1965, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Society, and received a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in political philosophy in 1970. William Antony Burlton Bennett (25 November 1807 – 20 February 1886) was an English cricketer who played for MCC between 1832 and 1845 and once for Kent County Cricket Club in 1844. Bennett played twelve matches in all following his debut for The Bs at Lord's in 1831 against an All-England team. Billy Bennett Billy Bennett (born 5 July 1955) is a Scottish former professional footballer who played as a defender. During a career spanning almost 20 years, he made more than 400 league appearances for a total of five different clubs. Career As a youth, Bennett played for Invergowrie Boys' Club before joining Scottish Football League First Division side Heart of Midlothian in 1973. He made his debut for the team in a friendly match away at Queens Park on 29 October 1973, scoring Hearts' fourth goal in a 5–1 victory. It was over a year before Bennett made another senior appearance, when he again scored in a 3–0 Hearts win over Berwick Rangers in the final of the East of Scotland Shield. He made his league debut for Hearts on 16 November 1974 in the 1–3 defeat away at Arbroath. Bennett left Hearts in the summer of 1976 to sign for Third Division outfit Berwick Rangers. William Ambrose Bennett (24 June 1878 – 16 April 1953) was an English professional footballer who played mainly as an outside right. He made 70 appearances in the Football League playing for Small Heath. Personal life William Ambrose Bennett was born in the Aston registration district of Warwickshire on 24 June 1878. He is variously reported as having attended Dixon Road Board School and Oakley Road School, both in Small Heath. He was a keen participant in sports other than football: he was captain and later president of Coventry Golf Club, played golf and hockey to county standard, and also played cricket, tennis and table tennis. He became a freemason. Bennett married Annie Louisa Taylor in 1906, at which time he was working as an engineer and living in Small Heath. William Bennett (footballer)
William Bennett was an English professional footballer who played as an inside forward. Born in Leyland, Lancashire, he was spotted by Football League First Division side Sheffield United while playing non-league football with Leyland Motors. He moved to Sheffield in February 1921, but was released in January 1922 after failing to make a first-team appearance. Bennett subsequently rejoined Leyland Motors, but his stay was short-lived as he joined Chorley in March 1922. At the end of the season, he was signed by Football League Third Division North outfit Nelson. He initially played in the reserve team, but was called up to the first-team for the match against Rochdale on 25 November 1922 due to an injury to regular inside forward Arthur Wolstenholme. Bennett did not make an impact on the match as Nelson fell to a 1–2 defeat, and he returned to the reserves for the remainder of the campaign. William Bennet (bishop)
William Bennet (4 March 1746 – 16 July 1820) (spelled William Bennett on his memorial in Cloyne Cathedral) was Bishop of Cloyne, Ireland, and an antiquary. He was born in the Tower of London and educated at Harrow School and Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he was a senior tutor for many years. One of his pupils was John Fane, who appointed Bennet as his chaplain upon taking up the post of Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1790. Bennet then became Bishop of Cork and Ross until 1794 when he became Bishop of Cloyne. He died in Montagu Square, London, and "His exertions while preaching a charity sermon at St Michael, Cornhill, exacerbated by a recent attack of gout, are supposed to have hastened his death."
