Welterweight is a weight class in combat sports. Originally the term ''welterweight'' was used only in boxing, but other combat sports like muay Thai, taekwondo, and mixed martial arts also use it for their own weight division system to classify the opponents. If used, welterweight is typically between lightweight and middleweight. Hedgemon Lewis
Hedgemon Lewis (February 25, 1946 – March 31, 2020) was an American professional boxer and trainer. He held the NYSAC welterweight world title in 1972 and challenged for welterweight world championships on three occasions; the unified WBA, and WBC titles twice in 1971 and 1974; and the WBC title in 1976. As an amateur, he won the National Golden Gloves lightweight title in 1964 and the welterweight title in 1966. Professional career Lewis was initially taken under the wing of Detroit-based coach Luther Burgess, who presided over his formative boxing years and was later trained by Eddie Futch. Due to Lewis’s exciting style, he soon attracted the attention of Hollywood. His management company consisted of actors and entertainment stars such as Ryan O'Neal, Bill Cosby and Robert Goulet. Roger Menetrey
Roger Menetrey (born 16 June 1945) is a retired French professional welterweight boxer. On 4 June 1971 he won the European Boxing Union (EBU) title and defended it five times. On 23 June 1973 he unsuccessfully contested the World Boxing Council, WBC title against José Nápoles. Menetrey retired after losing his EBU title to John H. Stracey on 27 May 1974. Eckhard Dagge
Eckhard Dagge (27 February 1948 – 4 April 2006) was a German professional boxer who competed in the super welterweight division. Eckhard Dagge was Germany's second world champion, after Max Schmeling, holding the World Boxing Council Light Middleweight title from 1976 to 1977. Dagge also held German National and European titles, during his ten-year career. Background Dagge was born in Berlin, Allied-occupied Germany, in 1948. He learned how to fight in the bars and taverns of Hamburg. He would later embark on an amateur career, in which he won 66 out of 80 bouts, before falling short of making the 1972 Olympic Team. Dagge turned professional in 1973, at the age of 25. Professional career Dagge would win the German Middleweight title, in his 6th bout. Everaldo Costa Azevedo (born July 24, 1944) is a Brazilian former professional boxer who competed from 1963 to 1982. Azevedo was ranked as the best Junior Welterweight in the world by the WBA in 1974 and No. 2 in the world by the WBC in 1972. Azevedo would fight for the World Title twice in his career. His first world title challenge came in 1972 when he lost a 15-round decision to the champion Bruno Arcari. José Cuevas (boxer)
José Isidro "Pipino" Cuevas González (born December 27, 1957) is a Mexican former professional boxer who competed from 1971 to 1989. He held the WBA welterweight title from 1976 to 1980. Cuevas was inducted into both the International Boxing Hall of Fame, and the World Boxing Hall of Fame. Professional career Cuevas turned professional at age 14; he won only seven of his first twelve bouts but eventually put together an eight bout winning streak before losing to Andy Price. On 17 July 1976, he received a shot at the WBA welterweight title against champion Ángel Espada. Cuevas pulled off an upset victory by knocking Espada to the canvas three times in the second round. At age 18, he was the youngest welterweight champion in history. In his first defense, he traveled to Japan and defeated hometown fighter Shoji Tsujimoto by knockout. International Boxing Hall Of Fame
The International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF), located in Canastota, New York, right next to exit 34 of the New York State Thruway, honors boxers, trainers and other contributors to the sport worldwide. Inductees are selected on ballots created through screened public nominations by members of the Boxing Writers Association of America. The IBHOF started as a 1980s initiative by Ed Brophy and other locals to honor Canastota's world boxing champions, Carmen Basilio and Basilio's nephew, Billy Backus; the village of Canastota inaugurated the new museum in 1989 which showcases boxing's rich history. With the opening of the Oneida Indian Nation’s Turing Stone Casino in the nearby city of Verona in the early 90s, a relationship was developed whereas various IBHOF Hall of Fame Weekend events were hosted at the casino.
