Billinge is a village within the Metropolitan Borough of St Helens, Merseyside, England. It forms the larger part of the civil parish of Billinge Chapel End. At the United Kingdom Census 2001, it had a population of 6,554. Within the boundaries of the historic county of Lancashire, Billinge is located by road approximately southwest of Wigan (town centre) and northeast of St Helens (town centre). History Etymology Billinge may mean "(place at the) pointed hill", from Old English ''billa'' "ridge, bill of sword" and -''ing'' "place at/people of the". The name was recorded as ''Bylnge'' in 1252. Governance This township or civil parish lies within the historic county boundaries of Lancashire. Higher End
Billinge Higher End or Higher End is an area of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, Greater Manchester, England. Governance Billinge was a civil parish lying within the Historic counties of England, historic county boundaries of Lancashire on 2 February 1837 it was divided into two townships, Billinge Chapel End and Billinge Higher End when the Wigan poor law union was formed merging the workhouse provision of 20 parishes in the Wigan area. In 1866 Billinge Higher End became a separate civil parish. The poor law union built the Wigan Poor Law Infirmary in 1906 which became Billinge Hospital. In 1872 Billinge Local Board of Health was established for the area of these two townships and two detached parts of Winstanley, Greater Manchester, Winstanley township (one known as Blackley Hurst and the other situated in the Carr Mill area, both lying within the area of Billinge Chapel End township). Billinge And Winstanley Urban District
Billinge (from 1927 Billinge and Winstanley) was, from 1872 to 1974, a local government district in the administrative county of Lancashire, England. The district was created in 1872 as a local government district, governed by a local board. It covered three separate parishes: Billinge Chapel End, Billinge Higher End and Winstanley. These had all previously been townships within the larger parish of Wigan, but as they appointed their own overseers of the poor they had each become separate civil parishes in 1866 with the passing of the Poor Law Amendment Act 1866. When sanitary districts were established in August 1872 the three parishes were briefly included in the Wigan Rural Sanitary District. A public meeting was held at the Stork Inn at Billinge Chapel End on 24 October 1872 where it was decided that the three parishes would form a group called the Billinge Local Government District, allowing them to establish their own board and become a separate urban sanitary district ... Billinge Hill
Billinge Hill is in the Metropolitan Borough of St Helens in North West England. With a maximum elevation of , it is the highest point of Merseyside. It lies in Billinge, within the historic county boundaries of Lancashire, and it is one of the 176 hills graded as a Marilyn in England. A beacon tower is at the summit. Built as a summerhouse to Winstanley Hall in the 18th century, it was used for the Year 2000 celebrations. Most fireworks displays for miles around can be seen from the summit and people often gather there in small numbers to watch displays over the towns of Wigan and St Helens and the local village of Rainford. Over the years it has been covered in graffiti which was recently cleaned off and the metal panels restricting access to the inside of the beacon have been painted black. Billinge Scar was a 19th-century country house (now demolished) near Blackburn, Lancashire, England. It was built of stone in two storeys around an existing structure, with an Elizabethan facade complete with battlements. It had twelve bedrooms, a coachman's quarters and yard, several reception rooms, a library and a school room. History Billinge was built in 1876 for Daniel Thwaites who was an MP for Blackburn from 1875 to 1880.
