Billie Irwin
Billie Irwin is a former netball player who played for the New Zealand national netball team when it won the 1967 World Netball Championships. Netball career Billie Irwin was born on 10 May 1942. She played netball for Rotorua, as one of a formidable defensive pairing with Tilly Vercoe, which was known as "Billie and Tilly". The coach of Rotorua was Taini Jamison and she picked the pair to be in the national team when she became its head coach. Beating Australia 40-34 in its final match, New Zealand won the 1967 world championships in Perth, Australia, its first win in the world championships. Irwin and Vercoe came to be known as "The Black Wall", because of their defense and the colours worn by the team. Netball is a ball sport played on a rectangular court by two teams of seven players. The primary objective is to shoot a ball through the defender's goal ring while preventing the opposing team from shooting through their own. Tilly Vercoe
Tilly Titihuia Rangimatau Hirst (née Vercoe; 17 September 1941 – 4 June 2021) was a New Zealand netball player. She was a member of the New Zealand team that won the 1967 World Netball Championships. Early life Hirst was born Tilly Titihuia Rangimatau Vercoe on 17 September 1941, the daughter of Ruhina and Raharuhi Vercoe. Of Māori descent, she was affiliated with Ngāti Pikiao, Ngāti Kea Ngāti Tuarā, and Ngāti Manawa. She was educated at Rotorua High School from 1955 to 1958. Taini Jamison
Taini Maremare Jamison (; 23 February 1928 – 28 April 2023) was a New Zealand netball coach and administrator. She coached the New Zealand national team to its first world title at the 1967 World Netball Championships. The Taini Jamison Trophy, contested between New Zealand and visiting international teams other than Australia, is named in her honour. Early life and family Jamison was born Taini Maremare Royal in Rotorua on 23 February 1928. Her father, Te Rangiātaahua Kiniwē Royal, was of Ngāti Raukawa and Ngāti Tamaterā descent, and her mother, Irihapeti Te Puhi-o-Rākaiora Taiaroa, was from Ngāi Tahu. New Zealand Sports Hall Of Fame
The New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame is an organisation commemorating New Zealand's greatest sporting triumphs. It was inaugurated as part of the New Zealand sesquicentenary celebrations in 1990. Some 160 members have been inducted into the hall of fame since its inception representing a wide variety of sports. Inductions are held regularly every second year. Since 1999, it has been located in Dunedin, in the city's railway station building, where a museum is sited displaying mementos of New Zealand's sporting achievements. Prior to this time the Hall of Fame was based in Wellington. Sports writer Joseph Romanos was the chief executive of the Hall of Fame from 1995 to 1998.
