William Clifford (priest)
William Clifford (alias Mansell) (died 30 April 1670) was an English Roman Catholic theologian. Life After education and ordination at Douai, Clifford went on the English mission. As vice-president, he helped the English College, Lisbon through difficult times, and became superior of Tournay College (Paris), assigned by Cardinal Richelieu to the English clergy. He evaded being made bishop in 1660, declined in 1670 the presidency of Douai, and closed his life in the Hôpital des Incurables in Paris. William Clifford (1878 – December 23, 1941) was an American actor and screenwriter of the silent era. He appeared in 170 films between 1910 and 1929. He also wrote for 30 films between 1913 and 1919. Clifford was born in New Orleans in 1878, and he was educated in voice and music in Toronto, Canada. Early in his career, Clifford acted on stage as a supporting player for 18 years before he formed his own repertory company that toured the United States. He also was the leading man in Earnest Shipman's ''Prisoner of Zenda'' company. He died in Los Angeles, California. William Hugh Joseph Clifford (24 December 1823 – 14 August 1893) was an English prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as Bishop of Clifton from 1857 to 1893. Life He was born in Irnham, Lincolnshire on 24 December 1823, the son of Hugh Clifford, 7th Baron Clifford of Chudleigh and Mary Lucy Weld, daughter of Cardinal Thomas Weld., ''The Episcopal Succession, volume 3'', pp. 407–409. He had schooling at Hodder Place, and attended Prior Park College, run by Augustine Baines. He then went to the Accademia dei Nobili Ecclesiastici in Rome. Priest Clifford was ordained to the priesthood on 25 August 1850, at the Pro-Cathedral of the Holy Apostles, by Joseph William Hendren. He became curate to William Vaughan there, and then moved on as vicar capitular in the new Diocese of Plymouth. In 1851 he travelled to Rome with Herbert Vaughan and William Maskell. William Kingdon Clifford (4 May 18453 March 1879) was a British mathematician and philosopher. Building on the work of Hermann Grassmann, he introduced what is now termed geometric algebra, a special case of the Clifford algebra named in his honour. The operations of geometric algebra have the effect of mirroring, rotating, translating, and mapping the geometric objects that are being modelled to new positions. Clifford algebras in general and geometric algebra in particular have been of ever increasing importance to mathematical physics, geometry, and computing. Clifford was the first to suggest that gravitation might be a manifestation of an underlying geometry. In his philosophical writings he coined the expression ''mind-stuff''. The Ohio State Buckeyes track and field team is the track and field program that represents Ohio State University. The Buckeyes compete in NCAA Division I as a member of the Big Ten Conference.
