Bill Chipley
William Allen Chipley (July 2, 1920 – December 27, 2002) was an American football player and coach. He played professionally for three seasons in the National Football League (NFL) with the Boston Yanks/ New York Bulldogs. He was drafted by the Boston Yanks in the eighth round of the 1947 NFL Draft. He first enrolled at Clemson University before transferring to Washington and Lee University. Chipley attended E. C. Glass High School in Lynchburg, Virginia Lynchburg is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States. An end in American and Canadian football is a player who lines up at either end of the line of scrimmage, usually beside the tackles. Rules state that a legal offensive formation must always consist of seven players on the line of scrimmage and that the player on the end of the line constitutes an eligible receiver. Before the advent of two platoons, in which teams fielded distinct defensive and offensive units, players that lined up on the ends of the line on both offense and defense were referred to simply as "ends". The position was used in this sense until roughly the 1960s. On offense, an end who lines up close to the other linemen is known as a tight end and is the only lineman who aside from blocking can run or catch passes. 1956 NCAA University Division Football Season
The 1956 NCAA University Division football season saw the University of Oklahoma Sooners finish a third consecutive season unbeaten and untied to again win the national championship. The 1956 season saw the NCAA split member schools into two divisions: larger schools were part of the University Division, later known as NCAA Division I, and smaller schools were placed in the College Division, later split into NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III. During the 20th century, the NCAA had no playoff for the major college football teams in the University Division, later known as Division I-A and now known as Division I FBS.
